o San Francisco-Based Postmates Raises $16 Million in Second Round
San Francisco -- Postmates, the San Francisco-based developer of an on-demand delivery service, said it has raised $16 million in its second round of funding, led by Spark Capital. Previous backers also participated in the round, which brings the company's total funding to just over $22 million. The company said it will use the latest proceeds to grow its operations, design and engineering teams and expand geographically. Since closing its first round of funding in Dec. 2012, Postmates has developed its own logistics software that dispatches and guides couriers through major cities to deliver local goods, including prepared food, groceries and retail goods. The company boasts partnerships and promotional campaigns with merchants in San Francisco, DC, Seattle and New York, including Whole Foods, Momofuku Milk Bar, Hapa Ramen and The Meatball Shop. "We're currently averaging thousands of deliveries per week," said co-founder and CEO Bastian Lehmann. "More importantly, is how quickly our supply is growing. We have nearly 2,000 active Postmates couriers on the platform in our four markets." Nabeel Hyatt, a venture partner at Spark Capital, will join the company's board of directors.

o San Francisco-Based Thoma Bravo Acquires PowerPlan
San Francisco -- Thoma Bravo, the San Francisco-based private equity firm, said on Monday it has acquired Atlanta-based PowerPlan, a provider of accounting, tax and capital budgeting optimization tools, from current investors JMI Equity and TPG Growth. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Founded in 1994, PowerPlan provides asset-intensive companies -- specifically within the utility, oil and gas, transportation and telecom industries -- with an integrated accounting, tax, and budgeting platform. "PowerPlan has addressed the information gaps that develop between finance and field operations in asset-centric businesses, and established a market-leading software company that is critical to all of its customers' operations," said Scott Crabill, a managing partner at Thoma Bravo.

San Jose, Calif. -- FotoNation, a San Jose-based unit of Tessera Technologies that develops computational imaging tools for smartphones and digital cameras, said on Monday it has acquired U.K.-based Smart Sensors Ltd. (SSL), a developer of iris recognition biometric technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "The iris structure yields five times as many distinct, identifiable features compared to fingerprints,” said Petronel Bigioi, FotoNation's senior vice president of engineering. "Integrating their capabilities with FotoNation's class-leading face detection, tracking and recognition capacities will enable our customers to deliver unique solutions tailored for mobile devices and other high volume products."
