o Menlo Park-Based GuideSpark Lands $22.2 Million in Third Round

Menlo Park, Calif. -- GuideSpark, the Menlo Park-based developer of an employee communications platform, said on Tuesday it has landed $22.2 million in its third round of funding, led by Meritech Capital Partners. Previous backers New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Storm Ventures and IDG Ventures also participated. The company said it will use the proceeds to expand marketing, sales, product development, content, CSM, infrastructure, corporate and business development activities. GuideSpark's web-based platform is designed to transform traditional employee communications into short videos on topics such as benefits, healthcare reform, compensation programs and compliance. Clients include L'Oreal USA, 7-Eleven, Adobe, Box and News Corp. Craig Sherman, managing director of Meritech Capital Partners, has joined the company's board of directors. Sherman is the former COO of Ancestry.com and CEO of Gaia Interactive.

o Milpitas-Based Sikka Software Raises $5.5 Million in Second Round

Milpitas, Calif. -- Sikka Software, the Milpitas-based developer of a retail healthcare cloud platform, said on Tuesday it has raised $5.5 million in its second round of funding, led by Sierra Ventures. Previous backer ATA Ventures also took part in the round, which the company will use to expand its sales and marketing activities and continue its growth across key practice areas. Sikka's Platform Cloud is connected to more than 400 combinations of practice management and financial systems covering over 96% of the dental, veterinary, audiology and optometry markets. "Given our broad footprint in the retail healthcare space, we are well positioned to be the leader in this large underserved market," said CEO Vijay Sikka. Mark Fernandes, managing director of Sierra Ventures, will join the company's board of directors.

o Carrick Capital, Silicon Valley Bank Co-Lead $19M Round for Mavenlink

San Francisco -- Mavenlink, an Irvine-based developer of business management software, said on Tuesday it has raised $19 million in a new round of funding co-led by San Francisco-based Carrick Capital Partners and Santa Clara-based Silicon Valley Bank. The round included $15 million in equity funding and a $4 million credit facility. Mavenlink will use the capital to accelerate product development, bolster marketing activities and expand market share. Mavenlink's web-based software is designed to help project-based businesses -- including marketing, public relations, management consulting, IT services and software implementation teams -- manage and grow their businesses more profitably.

o FTC Reaches Settlements with Marketers of "Melanoma Detection" Apps

Washington, DC -- The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it has reached settlements with a pair of companies who claimed their mobile apps could detect symptoms of melanoma, even in its early stages. The marketers of MelApp and Mole Detective have agreed to deals that bar them from continuing to make such unsupported claims. The FTC also said it is pursuing charges against two additional marketers of Mole Detective who did not agree to settle. The agency said that each of the apps instructed users to photograph a mole with a smartphone camera and input other information about it. The apps then purported to calculate the mole's melanoma risk as low, medium or high. The FTC alleged that the marketers deceptively claimed the apps accurately analyzed melanoma risk, despite a lack of adequate evidence to support such claims. "Truth in advertising laws apply in the mobile marketplace," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "App developers and marketers must have scientific evidence to support any health or disease claims that they make for their apps."
