o San Francisco-Based Social Finance Raises $200 Million in Fourth Round

San Francisco -- Social Finance (SoFi), the San Francisco-based developer of an online marketplace for lending and student loan refinancing, said on Tuesday it has raised $200 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Third Point Ventures. Wellington Management, Institutional Venture Partners and several previous backers also took part in the round, which the company will use to fuel the expansion of its consumer lending products throughout the U.S. and build out its marketplace with new options for investors. SoFi launched as an alternative to traditional banking in 2011, offering refinancing of both federal and private student loans. Since then, the company has originated more than $1.75 billion in loans, and expanded to offer products for young professionals, including mortgages, MBA loans and personal loans. Its mortgages and mortgage refinancing are currently available to borrowers in 12 states and Washington, DC. The firm currently has nearly 200 full-time employees and is actively recruiting in several areas. It also maintains offices in Washington, DC; Helena, Montana; and Frisco, Texas.

o Milpitas-Based IXYS to Acquire RadioPulse for Up to $22.5 Million

Milpitas, Calif. -- IXYS, a Milpitas-based developer of power semiconductors, said on Tuesday it will acquire South Korea-based RadioPulse, a developer of wireless network technology based on the ZigBee protocol. Under the deal, expected to close in March, IXYS will make an initial payment of $16.5 million in cash, plus up to $6 million more in potential earnouts. RadioPulse's products are designed for use in a range of power-sensitive applications, including those in the industrial, medical, consumer, smart grid and Internet of Things (IoT) markets.IXYS said the company's products are complimentary to its own microcontroller units (MCUs) for the industrial and consumer markets.

o VC Firm Bolt Closes $25 Million Fund, Expands to San Francisco

San Francisco -- Bolt, a Boston-based venture capital fund focused on connected hardware startups, said on Tuesday it has closed its second fund with $25 million in commitments and expanded to San Francisco. The firm said it has opened a new facility located in the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9 on the San Francisco waterfront. With the new fund, Bolt said it will be able to increase the size of its investments to as much as $500,000. The firm, which closed its initial $4 million fund in 2013, said it is particularly interested in seed-stage companies at the intersection of hardware and software. "We want to become the go-to connected hardware venture firm and with our new fund and locations on both coasts, we're confident we'll get there," said Bolt's co-founder and general partner, Axel Bichara. To date, Bolt has invested in 18 connected device startups, including DipJar, Kuvee, Petnet and Understory.

All told, the administration is seeking $14 billion for cybersecurity, up about $1 billion from each of the past two years, and $86.4 billion for federal IT spending, up $2.3 billion from a year ago. San Francisco -- Seattle Seahawks fans had higher average blood alcohol levels than New England Patriots fans during the Super Bowl, according to data gleaned from 1,458 smartphone breathalyzer tests collected from San Francisco-based BACtrack. "Seahawks fans' average BAC [blood alcohol content] levels surged during the first half of the game, peaking shortly after the halftime show celebration and then quickly falling after their 24-28 loss to the Patriots," said the company. After the game, New England fans' average BAC level "quickly rose during the post-game celebration."
