Menlo Park, Calif. -- Social media giant Facebook on Friday acquired a 21-building 56-acre industrial park, just south of its current campus in Menlo Park, from industrial real estate firm Prologis. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Menlo Science & Technology Park is located on Willow Road between Highway 101 and the Dumbarton Bridge. Prologis has owned and managed the property since 1998. o San Jose-Based Brocade to Acquire Riverbed's SteelApp Business

San Jose, Calif. -- Brocade, the San Jose-based networking technology giant, said it will acquire San Francisco-based Riverbed Technology's SteelApp product line for an unspecified amount of cash. The SteelApp line is designed to control traffic to and from applications, allowing them to be delivered to users anywhere from the cloud or data center. Under the agreement, Brocade will acquire the assets of the unit, along with its development and field personnel. SteelApp's assets will become part of Brocade's Software Business Unit, led by Kelly Herrell. Brocade said the deal, expected to close by the end of April, compliments its recent acquisitions of Vyatta (virtual routing and firewall) and Vistapointe (virtual network visibility and analytics).

o Uber Driver Launches Petition to Allow Tipping Through App

San Francisco -- A driver for San Francisco-based on-demand car service Uber has launched an online petition asking the company to make it possible for customers to tip through its mobile app. Peter Faris, who has been an Uber driver in the Washington, DC area for the past 2 ½ years, said the company currently adds a 20% default tip to UberTAXI rides, but doesn't allow users of UberX, UberBlack and UberSUV to add gratuities. He said that many passengers have offered to tip him, but often can't because they don't have cash on hand. He said Uber's competitor, Lyft, allows tipping for all rides, and even allows users to add a tip later. "Considering many drivers rely on Uber as a primary income source, it makes sense to allow them to earn a little extra money when passengers feel they've done a good job," wrote Faris on the petition. "Tipping is customary in the transportation service sector. As many riders no longer carry cash, a tipping feature integrated into the app (perhaps offered as an option when the rider rates the driver) would benefit drivers by adding to their earnings and job satisfaction." The petition, found at the link below, had about 9,500 signatures by midday Friday.

o Study: Millenials Are "Mobile-First" Generation, Baby Boomers Not So Much

Boston -- Younger audiences are more smartphone-centric, consuming less TV than older generations, according to a new study by Millward Brown Digital. The study, which highlights the differences in how generations use digital devices to perform daily activities, found that 77% of Millennials (ages 18-34) use a smartphone daily, while the figure drops to 60% for Generation X (ages 35-50) and 42% for Baby Boomers (ages 51-69). The results are completely opposite when it comes to using laptops or PCs and televisions, with Boomers most often using each, followed by Gen X and Millennials.
