o Millbrae-Based Stem Raises $12M in Initial Tranche of Third Round

Millbrae, Calif. -- Stem, a Millbrae-based provider of intelligent energy storage systems, said on Tuesday it has raised $12 million in the initial tranche of its third round, led by Mitsui. The company said it will use the funds to enhance its grid services offerings and expand into international markets. "The value of customer-sited storage in grid-constrained regions is not exclusive to the U.S., as demonstrated by the increasing interest we're seeing from some of the world's largest energy players," said CEO John Carrington. Stem's system combines predictive software with advanced energy storage to help businesses reduce energy costs without impacting operations.

o San Francisco-Based Eaze Lands $10M to Expand Marijuana Delivery

San Francisco -- Eaze, the San Francisco-based developer of an online service that lets medical marijuana patients order and receive deliveries within 15 minutes, said on Tuesday it has landed $10 million in its first round of funding. DCM Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Fresh VC, 500 Startups and other unspecified investors. The company plans to use the proceeds to expand its medical marijuana on-demand delivery service across the U.S., in locations where it is legal. "The new funding enables us to expand rapidly by further developing our technology, building new dispensary partnerships and scaling our team," said founder and CEO Keith McCarty. Eaze launched last July, and has since made more than 30,000 deliveries throughout the Bay Area. The start-up raised $1.5 million in a seed round in November.

o Palo Alto-Based Phantom Cyber Raises $2.7 Million in Seed Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Phantom Cyber, a Palo Alto-based developer of cybersecurity software, said on Tuesday it has raised $2.7 million in seed funding from several prominent individuals. Investors included Zach Nelson, the CEO of NetSuite; John Thompson, the former CEO of Symantec; Thomas Noonan, the former CEO of Internet Security Systems (ISS); and John Becker, the former CEO of Sourcefire. They were joined by venture capital firms Foundation Capital and Rein Capital. Phantom Cyber's core platform is designed to automate enterprise security operations. "Time and again, the root cause for data breaches and break-ins at even the best security-resourced organizations is not ignorance of risk or a lack of security controls, but a chronic inability to take quick, decisive action once an attack is underway," said founder and CEO Oliver Friedrichs. "We are offering a centralized, open and powerful platform organizations can use to close these gaps."
