o San Francisco-Based Udemy Raises $65 Million in Fourth Round

San Francisco -- Udemy, the San Francisco-based developer of a marketplace for online courses, said on Tuesday it has raised $65 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Stripes Group. Norwest Venture Partners (NVP) and Insight Venture Partners also participated. Ken Fox, the founder and managing partner of Stripes Group, will join the company's board of directors. Udemy, which currently derives half of its revenue from outside the U.S., said it will use the funds to continue expanding its tools and content in East and South Asia, Latin America and Western Europe. It also plans to bolster its corporate learning efforts, expanding its Udemy for Business offerings. Launched in 2010, Udemy currently offers more than 30,000 courses to more than 7 million students. The company now has raised $113 million since its inception.

o Campbell-Based Saama Technologies Lands $35 Million Investment

Campbell, Calif. -- Saama Technologies, a Campbell-based developer of big data tools and services for businesses, said on Tuesday it has landed a new $35 million minority investment from Carrick Capital Partners. It marks the company's first institutional funding. Saama said it will use the proceeds, in part, to expand its Ready Analytics product line. The company said the tools are part of a program that allows it to implement advanced analytics into company-specific business processes in a matter of weeks. Clients include Actelion, Brocade, Broadcom, Cisco, CSAA Insurance, Delta Dental, Dignity Health, PayPal, Salesforce.com and Unilever. Marc McMorris, Carrick's co-founder and managing director, will join Saama's board of directors.

o Sunnyvale-Based PMC-Sierra Names Edward Sharp to Key Executive Role

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- PMC-Sierra, a Sunnyvale-based developer of semiconductor and software products for networks, on Tuesday named Edward Sharp as its chief strategy and technology officer. Sharp most recently served as the vice president of NetApp's Emerging Products Group, and held a number of roles of increasing scope in NetApp's marketing, sales and product organizations from 1998-2014. In his new role, Sharp will lead PMC's worldwide strategy and technology efforts.

o Palo Alto-Based Hercules Names Robert Lake as Chief Credit Officer

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Hercules Technology Growth Capital, a Palo Alto-based provider of senior secured loans to venture-backed technology companies, has named Robert Lake as its chief credit officer. Lake, most recently the executive director of Oxford Finance, will be responsible for overseeing the company's lending policies and risk management practices related to its loan and investment portfolio.

o Geeknet Accepts Sweeter Deal to Be Acquired by GameStop

Fairfax, Va. -- Days after putting a hold on its previously announced acquisition by Hot Topic, Virginia-based Geeknet, the parent company of online retailers ThinkGeek and ThinkGeek Solutions, said on Tuesday it now will be bought by Texas-based video game and consumer electronics retailer GameStop. The $20-a-share deal values Geeknet at $140 million -- $18 million more than the deal it originally accepted a week ago. That deal provided Geeknet with the ability to accept a superior offer if it paid a 3% break-up fee, which GameStop has agreed to cover. Now, GameStop will launch a cash tender offer for shares of the company, which it said provides a "natural extension of GameStop's existing product offering." "Our board and management team believe this transaction is in the best interest of Geeknet and its stockholders," said Kathryn McCarthy, the CEO of Geeknet. "As a part of GameStop's family of brands, Geeknet will be well-positioned to achieve our goals of increasing our brand awareness and expanding our product offerings." The acquisition is expected to close by the end of July.
