o San Francisco-Based Mirror Raises $8.8 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Mirror, the San Francisco-based developer of a peer-to-peer trading platform focused on access to financial markets, said it has raised $8.8 million in its first round of funding, led by Route 66 Ventures. Previous backers RRE Ventures, Crosslink Capital, Battery Ventures and Tim Draper also took part in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $12.8 million. Pascal Bouvier, a general partner at Route 66 Ventures, will join the company's board. Mirror said it is building a smart contracts platform that enables peer-to-peer trading, using bitcoin, to "democratize" access to financial markets. The company uses blockchain technology -- the technology that underlies bitcoin and helps create a public, online ledger to verify transactions in digital currencies -- to allow users to create and exchange financial contracts. Formerly known as Vaurum, the company launched a trading service in 2014 and changed it name late last year. "We plan to use this new financing to continue to build out our engineering team and scale international operations," said co-founder and CEO Avish Bhama

o San Francisco-Based Blend Lands $6.3 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Blend, the San Francisco-based developer of a social media app aimed at members of Generation Z, said on Thursday it has raised $6.3 million in its first round of funding, led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA). Other participants included Metamorphic Ventures, Red Sea Ventures, Great Oaks Capital, the Al Nowais family from Dubai's Waha Capital and previous investors CAA Ventures, Foundation Capital, Galvanize Ventures and BaseVC. NEA's Sheel Tyle will join the company's board of directors. Blend said it will use the proceeds to expand its platform, refine its "nomination" concept and bolster its brand monetization strategy. Since the company's initial $2.7 million seed round in March 2014, co-founders Akash Nigam, Matt Geiger and Evan Rosenbaum have incorporated the concept of the nomination to its original trend-sharing platform. Now, users start a trend (such as a movement, inside joke or challenge) and nominate their friends, favorite brands, charities or celebrities to join them. Verified accounts, such as brands, are able to nominate the entire user base for a trend of their choosing. In return, the brands reward the users with the "best content" with gifts and discount codes.
