o San Mateo-Based TrapX Security Lands $9 Million in Second Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- TrapX Security, a San Mateo-based developed of deception-based cyber security defense tools, said on Friday it has raised $9 million in its second round of funding, co-led by Intel Capital and Liberty Israel Venture Fund. Previous backers BRM Group and Opus Capital also participated in the round, which the company will use to bolster its technology, hire engineers and marketers and expand its global sales activities. TrapX said it expects to grow its headcount by 40% with the next year. "You can't read the news today without learning about another significant security breach in a major institution," said CEO Greg Enriquez, who said his company offers an alternative to traditional approaches. "Unlike perimeter-based platforms that act as a first line of defense against intruders, but sit at the network's edge, deception technology sits inside an organization's network and is able to catch bad actors who have slipped past traditional perimeter and endpoint solutions."

San Jose, Calif. -- eBay is in advanced talks to sell its enterprise unit to Boston-based private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners for nearly $1 billion, Reuters reported. The news comes six months after the San Jose-based online marketplace said it would seek strategic alternatives for the unit, which rose out of a business called GSI Commerce that it acquired for $2.4 billion in 2011. eBay Enterprise offers a variety of services designed to help businesses bolster their e-commerce and digital marketing capabilities.

o San Francisco-Based Splunk Acquires Palo Alto-Based Caspida

San Francisco -- Splunk, the San Francisco-based developer of a software platform for real-time operational intelligence, said it has paid approximately $190 million to acquire Palo Alto-based Caspida, a developer of machine learning and behavioral analytics. The deal includes $127 million in cash and the remainder in stock. Splunk said the acquisition will bolster its platform with user behavioral analytics designed to help clients better detect security breaches that occur as a result of compromised credentials. "With Caspida, Splunk accelerates its focus on solving advanced threats -- both external and from insiders -- by shining a light on those who are wrongfully using valid credentials to freely and unpredictably exploit systems they have accessed," said Haiyan Song, Splunk's senior vice president of security markets.

o San Jose-Based Cisco to Invest $1 Billion Toward Growth in the U.K.

San Jose, Calif. -- Cisco Systems, the San Jose-based networking equipment giant, said it plans to spend more than $1 billion over the next 3-5 years to bolster its footprint in the U.K. John Chambers, the company's chairman and CEO, said the money will "support the next phase of the U.K.'s digitization plans." The commitment includes $150 million for Internet of Everything U.K. start-ups and venture capital equity investments focusing on technology for the financial, retail and healthcare industries, as well as smart city development. Cisco also plans to use a portion of the funds for acquisitions in the U.K., which is the company's second largest market, with nearly 7,000 employees. The company said it plans to double its Central London footprint with the addition of a new office before the end of this year.

o OPM: Massive Federal Cyber Attack Affected 21.5 Million People

Washington, DC -- For months, analysts have said that April's cyber attack on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) most likely was for more massive than originally acknowledged. Now, federal officials have confirmed that. OPM now says that the personal information, including Social Security numbers, of 21.5 million people was stolen in the massive breach -- up from an original estimate of about 4.2 million. The figure includes 19.7 million people who applied for background investigations, as well as 1.8 million family members and friends of applicants. Other information compromised includes full names, birth dates, home addresses, usernames and passwords used to fill out background forms and, in about 1.1 million cases, even fingerprints. "If you underwent a background investigation through OPM in 2000 or afterwards… it is highly likely that you are impacted by the incident involving background investigations," OPM said in a statement. "If you underwent a background investigation prior to 2000, you still may be impacted, but it is less likely." U.S, officials continue to blame hackers working on behalf of the Chinese government for the attack.
