o Sunnyvale-Based Sensity Systems Raises $36 Million in New Funding

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Sensity Systems, a Sunnyvale-based developer of light sensory networks that use LED lighting as the foundation for high-speed, sensor-based networks, said on Monday it has raised $36 million in a new round of funding, led by Cisco Investments. Acuity Brands, GE Ventures and Simon Venture Group also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $74 million. o San Jose-Based eBay Officially Spins Out PayPal

San Jose, Calif. -- Nearly 10 months after first announcing plans for the move, San Jose-based eBay said on Monday it has officially spun out online payments business PayPal into a separate, publicly traded company. PayPal began trading Monday on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol "PYPL." The stock closed the day up 5%. "As an independent company, we see a tremendous opportunity for PayPal to expand our role as a champion for consumers and partner to merchants, and to help shape the industry as money becomes digital at an increasingly rapid pace," said Dan Schulman, PayPal's president and CEO. In 2014, PayPal processed $235 billion in total payment volume and generated more than $8 billion in revenue. The company boasts more than 169 million active customer accounts in 203 world markets. PayPal previously was listed on the Nasdaq under the same ticker symbol before being acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.

o S.F.-Based Limelight Health Raises $3 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Limelight Health, a San Francisco-based developer of mobile technology for the health insurance industry, said on Monday it has raised $3 million in its first round of funding. MassMutual Ventures and AXA Strategic Ventures co-led the round, which also included participation from seed investor LaunchPad Digital Health. The company said it will use the proceeds to expand its sales and engineering teams, enhance its cloud-based products and expand distribution nationally. QuotePad, Limelight's first commercial product, is a mobile quoting and modeling platform that helps health insurance professionals quickly quote and compare employee health insurance benefits information. "With $375 billion wasted each year on billing and health insurance paperwork, there is tremendous opportunity for the right technology solution to reduce unnecessary administrative tasks and inefficiencies in workflow," said co-founder and CEO Jason Andrew.
