o Apple, Google Among 13 Companies to Sign White House Climate Pledge

Several major technology companies, including Cupertino-based Apple and Mountain View-based Google, have signed on to support a major new Obama administration climate initiative, the White House announced on Monday. The American Business Act on Climate Pledge aims to cut nearly 6 billion tons of carbon pollution through 2030, an amount equivalent to taking all the cars in the U.S. off the road for more than four years. Each of the 13 initial signers of the pledge, which also includes Microsoft, have vowed to reduce their emissions, increase low-carbon investments, deploy more clean energy and take other actions to build more sustainable businesses and tackle climate change. Specifically, Apple, which already runs all of its U.S. operations on 100% renewable energy, will bring an estimated 280 megawatts of clean power generation online by the end of 2016. Google also has pledged to power its operations with 100% renewable energy, while reducing single occupancy vehicle commuting and water consumption and bringing cloud computing to climate science. A second round of pledges will be announced this fall.

o City of San Leandro Launches Free Public Wi-Fi Service

San Leandro, Calif. -- The city of San Leandro has launched a new outdoor Wi-Fi service, the first of its kind in the Bay Area that is gigabit-capable. The free service, built on technology from Sunnyvale-based Ruckus Wireless, will initially provide free high-speed wireless Internet access within a four-block radius, including all of Pelton Plaza and surrounding properties, The Village, Parrott Street (including the Farmers' Market), and parts of Juana Avenue and East 14th Street. Over time, the city plans to expand coverage to other surrounding areas, including the city-owned Marina Community Center on Wicks Boulevard. San Leandro Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter said the service "offers some of the fastest speeds available anywhere within the Bay Area." Ruckus' technology also forms the foundation of public Wi-Fi networks in San Jose, San Francisco, Mountain View, Hayward, Redwood City, San Mateo and Belmont.

o AT&T Completes $49 Billion Acquisition of DirecTV

Dallas, Texas -- More than a year after first announcing the deal, telecom giant AT&T on Friday completed its $49 billion acquisition of satellite TV provider DirecTV, creating the nation's largest pay TV provider. AT&T paid $95 a share in a combination of cash and stock. The combined company now provides pay TV service to more than 26 million customers in the U.S. and more than 191 million in Latin America. AT&T also counts more than 132 million wireless subscribers and connections in the U.S. and Mexico. "We'll now be able to meet consumers' future entertainment preferences, whether they want traditional TV service with premier programming, their favorite content on a mobile device or video streamed over the Internet to any screen," said Randall Stephenson, the chairman and CEO of AT&T, in a statement. "This transaction allows us to significantly expand our high-speed Internet service to reach millions more households, which is a perfect complement to our coast-to-coast TV and mobile coverage." The companies plan to integrate their services over the coming months. Current customers of AT&T and DirecTV will continue to receive their same services and channel lineups.
