o Mountain View-Based Symantec to Sell Veritas in $8 Billion Deal

Mountain View, Calif. -- Symantec, the Mountain View-based Internet security giant, said on Tuesday it will sell its Veritas information management business to an investor group led by The Carlyle Group for $8 billion in cash. Symantec said it expects to receive approximately $6.3 bullion in net cash proceeds as a result of the deal, which is expected to close by Jan. 1. "This transaction strengthens our financial foundation, paving the way for Symantec to grow its security business," said Michael Brown, Symantec's president and CEO. Symantec said it explored a variety of alternatives for Veritas, a company it merged with in 2005 in a deal valued at $13.5 billion. Symantec announced last fall it planned to separate Veritas into an independent publicly traded company by the end of this year. Carlyle Group has named Bill Coleman and Bill Krause will become the new CEO and chairman, respectively, of Veritas.

o Google Launches Umbrella Company Alphabet, Installs New CEO

Mountain View, Calif. -- Citing the need of tech companies to stay relevant through change, Mountain View-based Google said it has launched a new publicly traded umbrella company called Alphabet. Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who will head the Alphabet as CEO and president, respectively, said the new structure will allow them to more easily manage various unrelated businesses independently of Google's core business. "In general, our model is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, with Sergey and me in service to them as needed," wrote Page. The most prominent of those CEOs will be Sundar Pichai, who will take the reigns of a "slimmed down" Google from Page. Pichai has been with Google for 11 years, leading the product and engineering efforts of its Internet businesses since October. Though Google will be the largest of Alphabet's businesses, it also will include ventures like Internet of Things company Nest, life sciences business Calico and incubator X lab. In addition, Page said the new structure will allow Google to grow its investment arms, Ventures and Capital. "For Sergey and me this is a very exciting new chapter in the life of Google," wrote Page. "I should add that we are not intending for this to be a big consumer brand with related products -- the whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands."

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Aricent said the acquisition, which adds more than 1,200 employees, bolsters its offerings to the semiconductor market and expands its services in the areas of software, hardware and network products for the Internet of Things.
