o San Mateo-Based PokitDok Lands $34 Million in Second Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- PokitDok, a San Mateo-based developer of cloud-based web services designed to integrate healthcare transactions into any app, website or product, said on Thursday it has raised $34 million in its second round of funding. Lemhi Ventures led the round, which the company will use to give healthcare businesses greater access to its APIs and services, including those for payment processing, eligibility checks, referrals, claims submissions, online scheduling, patient identity management and provider search. PokitDok also plans to bolster its business development, marketing and technical support operations. "Much like Uber scaled quickly by leveraging APIs, emerging and established health companies can apply a similar technical strategy using PokitDok," said co-founder and CEO Lisa Maki. "With this round of funding, we're bringing the API economy to every healthcare organization and software developer." Tony Miller, the founder and managing partner of Lemhi. and Jodi Hubler, Lemhi's managing director, will join the company's board of directors.

o Millbrae-Based Stem Lands Additional $33 Million to Close Third Round

Millbrae, Calif. -- Stem, a Millbrae-based provider of intelligent energy storage systems, said on Thursday it has raised an additional $33 million to close its third round of funding at $45 million. RWE Supply & Trading led the latest tranche, which comes after the company initially raised $12 million in April. Previous backers also contributed. Stem said that RWE, one of Europe's largest electricity and gas companies, will play an integral role in helping it expand its global presence. "RWE brings more than a decade of successfully integrating high penetrations of renewables across Western Europe and provides valuable case studies on the evolving grid," said CEO John Carrington. Stem's system combines predictive software with advanced energy storage to help businesses reduce energy costs without impacting operations.

o S.F.-Based Front Row Education Raises $5.3 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Front Row Education, the San Francisco-based developer of a math education platform for K-8 students, said on Thursday it has raised $5.3 million in its first round of funding, led by Amasia. Harrison Metal, Baseline Ventures and several previous backers also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $6.6 million. Launched in 2013, Front Row is the developer of a program that lets students practice Common Core-aligned math at their own pace on tablets and computers, while teachers access data on their performance from a dashboard. The goal is to help teachers better adjust to the needs of struggling students. The program is now used in more than 20 countries, including 1 in 5 elementary and middle schools across the U.S. "Three out of five students in America aren't proficient in math, and our current system makes it hard for them to ever catch up," said co-founder and CEO Sidharth Kakkar. "This round of funding with top-tier investors will help us further assist teachers and students in reaching their full potential."

o NBCUniversal to Invest $200 Million in Blog Network Vox Media

Washington, DC -- In a marriage of old and new media, NBCUniversal said it will invest $200 million in Vox Media, the online publisher of a blog network that includes sports site SB Nation, tech culture site The Verge and recently acquired tech business site Re/code. The deal values Vox, which is home to eight digital media brands, at approximately $1 billion, according to The New York Times. Other brands of the company include Polygon (gaming), Vox.com (news), Eater (dining), Racked (fashion) and Curbed (real estate). Steve Burke, the CEO of NBCUniversal, said the investment will be part of a "collaborative partnership" between the companies involving editorial content, advertising and technology. The investment comes during a period of rapid growth for Vox, which is fresh off its acquisition of Re/code, the popular tech blog launched last year by the founders of All Things Digital. "We are extraordinarily excited to collaborate in many areas including video programming, brand advertising, cross-promotion and platform technology to grow existing properties and launch new franchises," said Jim Bankoff, Vox's chairman and CEO.
