o Pleasanton-Based Virtual Incision Raises $11.2 Million in Funding

Pleasanton, Calif. -- Virtual Incision, a developer of robotically assisted surgical devices with dual headquarters in Pleasanton and Nebraska, said it has raised $11.2 million in a new round of funding, led by Bluestem Capital. Previous backers including PrairieGold Venture Partners also participated in the round, which the company will use to conduct a feasibility study on the use of its technology for colon resection. More than 2 million patients undergo colon resection procedures each year, with approximately two-thirds performed via a completely open surgical procedure involving an 8- to 12-inch incision and up to six weeks of recovery time. "Virtual Incision seeks to enable a minimally invasive approach to a variety of procedures that are typically performed `open' today, with the potential to improve clinical outcomes and health care costs," said CEO John Murphy.

o S.F.-Based Amplitude Analytics Raises $9 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Amplitude Analytics, a San Francisco-based developer of mobile analytics designed to help customers better understand user behavior data, said it has raised $9 million in its first round of funding. Benchmark led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Quest Venture Partners, Data Collective, Merus Capital, Charlie Cheever and Dave Morin, as well as several angel investors. Founded in 2012, the company emerged from Y Combinator as a voice-recognition company called Sonalight. Its founders built a new analytics stack to support the project, which had much broader appeal than they expected. "When we shared our new tools with the mobile community, we realized that every product team faced the same issues," said co-founder and CEO Spenser Skates. "They routinely complained about prohibitive volume-based pricing or analytics that couldn’t scale to the data volumes they faced. We knew we could solve both, so we pivoted and Amplitude Analytics was born." Clients now include Nokia, Rdio, Rhapsody, MapQuest, DoorDash and Yik Yak.

o Global Semiconductor Sales Rise 4% in First Half of 2015

Washington, DC -- Global semiconductor sales grew nearly 4% during the first half of 2015, compared with the same period last year, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Sales increased the most in China (7.8%) and the Americas (5.6%), but fell sharply in places like in Europe (down 11.5%) and Japan ( down 13.6%). "Macroeconomic headwinds and softening demand have slowed global semiconductor market growth somewhat, but the industry still posted its highest-ever second-quarter sales and remains ahead of the pace of sales set in 2014, which was a record year for semiconductor revenues," said John Neuffer, the organization's president and CEO.
