o San Mateo-Based Apttus Raises $108 Million in Third Round

San Mateo, Calif. -- Just seven months after announcing its previous round of funding, San Mateo-based Apttus, a developer of cloud software that drives the business process between a buyer's interest in a purchase and the realization of revenue, said on Tuesday it has raised $108 million in its third round, led by KIA. Iconiq Capital, K1 Capital and Salesforce Ventures also took part in the round, which comes after the company raised $41 million in February. Apttus said it will use the latest proceeds to create new business tools and services for customers in field such as manufacturing, life sciences, financial services and telecommunications. Launched in 2006, Apttus focuses on an area known as quote-to-cash automation, including configure price quote, contract management, renewals management and revenue management. The company is a long-standing partner of salesforce.com, with applications built natively on the Salesforce platform.

o S.F.-Based Cloud Apps Capital Partners Raises $50M for First Fund

San Francisco -- Cloud Apps Capital Partners, a new San Francisco-based venture capital firm founded by former salesforce.com executive Matt Holleran, said on Tuesday it has raised more than $50 million for its inaugural fund. The firm plans to target early-stage companies in the cloud business applications sector, leading first rounds of $2-$4 million and offering product, sales, marketing and business-development consulting. "The venture market today is not optimized for cloud business application companies," said Holleran, general partner at Cloud Apps. "New business application companies require more capital and more board support than the seed market can provide. Large venture firms would like to see more traction prior to investing. We know firsthand what it takes to build category-leading business application companies, and we help the entrepreneur to put the fundamentals in place to be successful." To date, the firm has invested in seven companies, including Hootsuite, ServiceMax, Insightly, Dasheroo and GoFormz.

Under the arrangement, Hilton guests will be able to receive automated mobile notifications on the day of travel to request an Uber ride to their hotel. o Startup Incubator 1776 Closes Inaugural $12.5 Million Seed Fund

San Francisco -- 1776, the Washington, DC-based startup incubator with a campus in San Francisco, said on Tuesday it has closed its inaugural $12.5 million seed fund, which will focus on early-stage companies in highly regulated industries such as health, education, energy, transportation and smart cities. The firm, which operates three campuses, plans to make seed-stage investments averaging around $100,000, as well as follow-on investments in portfolio companies. 1776 first announced the fund last year, and already has backed 20 companies alongside such co-investors as 500 Startups, Silicon Valley Angels and Govtech Fund, as well as angels including Ron Conway, Marc Benioff and Jason Calacanis. Its first investment was in Ridescout, developer of a platform that lets users search and compare ground transportation options, which was acquired by Daimler late last year. The fund is managed by 1776 co-founders Donna Harris and Evan Burfield, along with Steve Graubart, formerly of Calvert Ventures; Rusty Greiff, a senior advisor to New Markets Venture Partners; and others.

o Study: Industry Experience Has Biggest Impact on Start-Up Survival

Washington, DC -- The success of entrepreneurs may hinge more on their previous industry experience than their startup experience, according to a new study from the National Women's Business Council (NWBC). The study found that entrepreneurial women with industry experience are less likely to be undercapitalized. "We had a hunch that women who had extensive industry experience were better positioned to start businesses, and now we have definitive proof that that is the case," said Amanda Brown, executive director of the NWBC. "Investors value startup experience… and this research confirms there are other indicators for firm success, suggesting that perhaps investors are overvaluing startup experience in their decision-making process." The study also found that team ownership -- particularly when at least two owners are involved in day-to-day operations -- leads to a higher likelihood of company success.
