o Palo Alto-Based Agora Raises $20 Million in Second Round of Funding
Palo Alto, Calif. -- Two months after opening its new headquarters in Palo Alto, Agora, a developer of technology that allows clients to add real-time communications to any mobile app, said on Tuesday it has raised $20 million in its second round of funding. Morningside, SIG, GGV Capital, ShunWei and IDG took part in the round, which increased the company's total funding to $25.9 Million. Agora said it will use the proceeds to further expand its global infrastructure, as well as its sales and marketing activities. The company's software development kit lets clients add real-time communications to their apps, allowing users to make voice calls, video chats, share screens and exchange files. Founder and CEO Tony Zhao led the engineering team that developed the early voice communications features for WebEx.

o San Jose-Based Datos IO Emerges with $12.5 Million in First Round
San Jose, Calif. -- Datos IO, the San Jose-based developer of a recovery platform for distributed applications and scale-out databases, said on Tuesday it has emerged from stealth after raising $12.5 million in its first round of funding. Lightspeed Venture Partners and True Ventures joined several angel investors in the round, which came after the company earlier landed $2.75 million in seed funding. Datos IO said it will use the proceeds to build the sales and engineering teams needed to bring its product to market, as well as to bring aboard its first revenue-generating customers and continue product development. "Traditional recovery approaches work great for relational databases, but using them for next-generation databases doesn't work," said co-founder and CEO Tarun Thakur, adding that his company's technology will let clients "innovate and compete effectively in today's mobile, social, cloud-native world." John Vrionis, a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Puneet Agarwal, partner at True Ventures, have joined the company's board of directors.

Pleasanton, Calif. -- ThinkHR , the Pleasanton-based developer of a cloud-based human resources platform supported by human advisors, said on Tuesday it has landed a $12 million investment from Kennet Partners, a U.K.-based private equity firm with offices in Foster City. The company will use the proceeds to accelerate its product, technology and market development plans. Peter Yozzo, ThinkHR's founder and CEO, said the additional funding allows his company to "create powerful new tools and services that help our partners to enhance and expand the value they deliver to clients." Prior to the investment, ThinkHR had been financed through angel funding, venture debt and revenue from ongoing operations.
