o Palo Alto-Based HP to Cut Up to 30,000 Jobs in Preparation for Split

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Preparing to split into two separate companies, Palo Alto-based technology giant HP said on Tuesday it plans to cut 25,000-30,000 jobs as part of a move to slash $2.7 billion in annual costs. The layoffs, which represent about 10% of the company's total workforce, come as HP prepares to divide into two public companies on Nov. 1. The new HP Enterprise will focus on enterprise technology infrastructure, software and service, while HP will focus on personal computers and printers. "These restructuring activities will enable a more competitive, sustainable cost structure for the new Hewlett Packard Enterprise," said CEO Meg Whitman. "We've done a significant amount of work over the past few years to take costs out and simplify processes and these final actions will eliminate the need for any future corporate restructuring."

o Palo Alto-Based Hercules Technology Expands Into Southern California

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Hercules Technology Growth Capital, a Palo Alto-based provider of senior secured loans to venture-backed tech companies, said on Wednesday it has expanded into Southern California. The company has hired Tim Barnes, a former vice president at Silicon Valley Bank, as a managing director to lead its new Los Angeles office. The expansion is part of Hercules' planned growth strategy, giving it penetration into Southern California, where it is currently underrepresented. The Southern California region received more than $4 billion in venture capital investments in 2014, and has already received that amount during the first half of this year. Hercules currently has strongholds in Silicon Valley, New England and the Mid-Atlantic region.
