o Los Gatos-Based Tascent Raises $18.5 Million in First Round
Los Gatos, Calif. -- Tascent, a Los Gatos-based developer of biometric technologies focused on iris recognition, said it has raised $18.5 million in its first round of funding, led by San Mateo-based Tano Capital. The company, which earlier this year acquired AOptix Technologies' Identity Solutions business unit, said it will use the proceeds to develop new iris recognition and mobile biometric identity products, as well as expand its presence in the government and enterprise sectors. Tascent's clients include Dubai International Airport, London Gatwick Airport and several high security facilities in the U.S.

o San Ramon-Based 8K Miles to Acquire NexAge Technologies
San Ramon, Calif. -- 8K Miles Software Services, a San Ramon-based provider of cloud connectivity between consumers, businesses, healthcare providers and pharmaceutical companies, said on Friday it will pay $3 million in cash and stock to acquire New Jersey-based NexAge Technologies USA, a provider of regulatory compliance and technology tools. 8K Miles said the acquisition will bolster its offerings targeting the life sciences industry, including its CloudEzRx framework. Suresh Venkatachari, the company's chairman and CEO, said that the platform has "the larger purpose of empowering pharmaceutical and life sciences enterprises to utilize cloud services across value and supply chains."

o Alameda-based Penumbra Raises $120 Million in Upsized IPO
Alameda, Calif. -- Shares of Alameda-based Penumbra spiked 35% in Friday's midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, hours after the medical device developer raised $120 million in its upsized initial public offering (IPO). The company sold 4 million shares for $30 each -- up from earlier estimates of 3.8 million shares for $25-$28 each. Its shares are now trading under the symbol "PEN." Penumbra develops medical devices across two major markets -- neuro and peripheral vascular. The company, which has approximately 1,000 employees, sells its products to hospitals primarily through its direct sales organization in the U.S., most of Europe, Canada and Australia, and through distributors in select international markets.

o San Jose-Based Adobe Loses SVP of Digital Media Business
San Jose, Calif. -- Adobe Systems, the San Jose-based developer of web publishing software, said that David Wadhwani will step down as senior vice president and general manager of its digital media business to pursue an outside CEO opportunity. The company has named Bryan Lamkin to lead the business, which includes Creative Cloud and Adobe Document Cloud. Lamkin currently leads the Document Cloud business as well as corporate development and technology. Two other executives also will expand their current roles. Abhay Parasnis, who joined Adobe in July as CTO and senior vice president of cloud technology, will now assume responsibility for the company's security and research teams, and CFO Mark Garrett will add corporate development, which includes corporate strategy, M&A and corporate alliances, to his existing responsibilities.
