o San Francisco-Based CoverHound Raises $33.3 Million in Third Round

San Francisco -- CoverHound, the San Francisco-based developer of a digital platform for comparing and purchasing insurance, said on Tuesday it has raised $33.3 million in its third round of funding, led by ACE Group. Previous backers RRE Ventures, Blumberg Capital, Core Innovation Capital, Route 66 Ventures and American Family Ventures also contributed. James Robinson III, co-founder and general partner of RRE Ventures, has joined the company's board of directors. The company, which also raised $14 million in its second round in March, now has landed more than $53 million since its inception. CoverHound, a member of the second AngelPad class in 2011, said it will use the latest proceeds to expand its team in both San Francisco and Westlake Village, and further enhance its core platform. CoverHound works with U.S. property and casualty insurance carriers such as The General, Esurance, Progressive, 21st Century, Safeco, Infinity, Mercury, Kemper, Travelers, The Hartford and MetLife.

o San Jose-Based GigOptix to Acquire South Korea's Terasquare

San Jose, Calif. -- GigOptix, a San Jose-based supplier of high-speed semiconductor components, said on Tuesday it will pay approximately $4 million in cash to acquire South Korea-based Terasquare, a developer of low power, CMOS high speed communication interface semiconductors. The deal, which also includes $1.15 million in assumed liabilities, is expected to close on Sept. 30. Avi Katz, the chairman and CEO of GigOptix, called the acquisition "the next piece in our long-term plan of creating the industry's premier supplier of Datacom high-speed chipset solutions." Terasquare will become the company's headquarters in Korea under the name GigOptix-Terasquare Korea (GTK). "[It] also serve as our hub for proliferation of our other high-speed connectivity and consumer electronics products," said Katz.

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Expway, a Sunnyvale-based developer of LTE multicast products, said on Tuesday it has raised $3.3 million in a new round of funding, led by new investor Isatis Capital. The company said it will use the proceeds to bolster its worldwide expansion -- primarily through its recently opened office in China -- and develop new products for the growing usage of LTE multicast by public safety agencies. "An increasing variety of applications, from in-stadium broadcasting to public safety, are being implemented using LTE," said CEO Thierry Sergent, adding that the latest funding "strengthen[s] our ability to sustain our dominant position in these rapidly growing markets."

Financial terms of the deal, which will allow the company to accelerate its growth plans, were not disclosed.
