o Palo Alto-Based Phantom Cyber Raises $6.5 Million in First Round
Palo Alto, Calif. -- Phantom Cyber, a Palo Alto-based developer of security automation and orchestration tools, said on Monday it has raised $6.5 million in its first round of funding, co-led by TechOperators and Blackstone. NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson, Virtual Instruments CEO John Thompson and Rein Capital also participated in the round. TechOperators' Thomas Noonan, the former CEO of Internet Security Systems (ISS), will join the company's board of directors. Phantom's platform integrates with an organization's existing security technologies to provide a layer of "connective tissue" between them. "Just as automation has improved finance, marketing, human resources, software development, and other aspects of IT, it is now time for security to benefit," said Phantom Cyber's founder and CEO, Oliver Friedrichs. The company said it will use the funds to bolster its market penetration and product development.

o San Jose-Based RiseSmart Acquired by Randstad Holding
San Jose, Calif. -- RiseSmart, the San Jose-based developer of a cloud-based outplacement technology platform, said it has been acquired by Netherlands-based HR services giant Randstad Holding in a deal worth $100 million. RiseSmart will continue to operate under its current name as an independent unit of Randstad focused on technology. "Randstad is the leading player in the HR space and opens us to a vast set of clients and relationships, which bring greater opportunities," said Sanjay Sathé, RiseSmart's founder and CEO. Founded in 2007, RiseSmart provides a mix of technology and personalized service designed to help transitioning employees find new jobs more quickly than traditional methods. The company's backers include Norwest Venture Partners, Storm Ventures, Accel-KKR and a number of angels.

San Francisco -- Yelp, the San Francisco-based local business review site, on Monday named board member Diane Irvine as its new chairman. She succeeds Max Levchin, who stepped down from the role in July to devote more time to his duties as the CEO of financial technology company Affirm. Irvine is the former CEO and CFO of Blue Nile, and also has served as the CFO of Plum Creek Timber Company and as a tax partner at accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand. "Diane has made significant contributions to Yelp since she joined the board in 2011," said co-founder and CEO Jeremy Stoppelman. "Diane brings an ideal blend of finance, technology and international business expertise."

o New Software to Help Online Publishers Find Best Contributors
Mountain View, Calif. -- Aiming to improve the way online publishers ask for and respond to user comments, The Coral Project, a new collaboration between The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Mountain View-based Mozilla Foundation, on Monday launched its first product. The open-source software is a tool designed to help publishers better manage their roster of commenters and contributors, making it easier to highlight the best reader contributions. The tool will gather a mix of existing data from readers of comments and other user contributions, such as likes, shares and flags, and pair it with new data, such as ratings of commenters from users and editors, reporters and community mangers. The result will be a system that manages the reputations of users, allowing publishers to classify their users by levels of trust. "Our aim is to test the product with partner organizations in early 2016," said Greg Barber, director of digital news at The Washington Post. "We'll work with those organizations to not only test our software, but also iterate on new approaches to asking for and responding to user contributions. In the end, this product will be part of a suite of tools that our group will create between now and the end of our grant period in 2017." The Coral Project is funded by a $3.89 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

o Apple Announces Record First-Weekend Sales of New iPhones
Cupertino, Calif. -- Three days after launching its new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models, Cupertino-based Apple said on Monday it already has sold more than 13 million of the devices, setting a company record for first-weekend sales. The smartphones will go on sale in an additional 40 country on Oct. 9. Unveiled earlier this month, the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus models introduce what the company is calling "3D Touch," a feature that lets users interact with their devices based on how forcefully they touch their screen. Powered by the company's new A9 chip, the devices also feature "Live Photos," 12-megapixel photos that reveal the moments immediately before and after the shot was taken. Pre-orders began Sept. 12.
