o BlackBerry to Acquire Sunnyvale-Based Good Technology for $425 Million

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- BlackBerry, the Canadian mobile technology giant, said on Friday it will pay $425 million in cash to acquire Sunnyvale-based Good Technology, a developer of enterprise mobility tools that allow employees to connect to corporate networks using their personal mobile devices. The deal is expected to close by the end of November. BlackBerry said the acquisition will allow it to offer a unified, secure mobility platform with applications for any mobile device on any operating system. The company also will bolster its presence with large corporations and government customers. "By acquiring Good, BlackBerry will better solve one of the biggest struggles for CIOs today, especially those in regulated industries -- securely managing devices across any platform," said John Chen, BlackBerry's executive chairman and CEO. The news comes after Good in January reportedly laid off more than 10% of its staff in a bid to trim revenue ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO). Good filed in May 2014 to raise up to $100 million, but has since delayed the IPO. The company is backed by Blueprint Ventures, DFJ, ePlanet Capital, GKM Newport, Meritech Capital Partners, Oak Investment Partners and Rustic Canyon Partners.

o Tech Giants to Pay $415 Million in Anti-Poaching Settlement

San Jose, Calif. -- Ending a four-year legal battle, a federal judge late Wednesday approved a $415 million settlement with four of Silicon Valley's largest tech giants, resolving allegations that they secretly agreed not to poach each other's employees. Under the agreement, Google, Intel, Adobe Systems and Apple will collectively pay the approximately 64,500 former workers roughly $5,800 each. An earlier settlement reached last year had been thrown out by U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who claimed that the total amount was too low and legal fees too high. Koh wrote on Wednesday that the latest settlement was "fair, adequate and reasonable."

o PhantomAlert Sues Google's Waze for Alleged Data Theft

Palo Alto, Calif. -- PhantomAlert, the Washington, DC-based developer of a traffic information service that warns drivers of red light cameras, speed traps and other traffic conditions, has filed suit against Google's Waze, alleging that the company stole its proprietary data. According to the suit, filed this week in San Francisco federal court, PhantomAlert claims that Waze "copied the PhantomAlert database and incorporated the data into the Waze application." CNET reported that PhantomAlert CEO Yosef Seyoum discovered the apparent theft shortly after Google's $1.3 billion acquisition of Palo Alto-based Waze in 2013, noticing that fictitious information planted on his company's site also appeared on Waze's app.

o Global Semiconductor Sales Take Dip in July

Washington, DC -- Worldwide semiconductor sales took a dip in July, according to new figures from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Sales for the month reached $27.9 billion, down 0.9% from the prior year and 0.4% from the previous month. "Global semiconductor sales have slowed somewhat this summer in part due to softening demand, normal market cyclicality and currency devaluation in some regional markets," said John Neuffer, president and CEO of the SIA. Despite the hiccup, year-to-date chip sales through July are still higher than at the same point in 2014, when semiconductor revenue broke a record.
