o Mountain View-Based BigPanda Lands $16 Million in Second Round

Mountain View, Calif. -- BigPanda, the Mountain View-based developer of a platform designed to analyze massive volumes of IT alerts and turn them into actionable insights, said on Thursday it has raised $16 million in its second round of funding, led by Battery Ventures. Previous backers Sequoia Capital and Mayfield also participated. Scott Tobin, a general partner at Battery Ventures, will join the company's board. BigPanda's platform is designed to help companies minimize or prevent IT service disruptions. "Every company today is a software company, and uptime is mission-critical," said CEO Assaf Resnick. "If you're a retailer and your point-of-sale system is down, your business is down. If you're an airline and your reservation system is down, your business is down. Our goal is to make it easy for businesses to quickly detect and resolve IT issue." Clients include Cisco, Caesars, Gap, News Corp., PayPal and Wix.

o Menlo Park-Based Canaan Partners Bolsters West Coast Investment Team

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Planning to raise its 10th fund, Menlo Park-based Canaan Partners, an early-stage venture capital firm, said it has made moves to strengthen its West Coast presence, naming veteran healthcare investor Nina Kjellson as a general partner and promoting Hrach Simonian to general partner in its technology practice. Kjellson previously served as a general partner at InterWest Partners, where she was involved with more than two dozen investments over the past 13 years. "Nina has a stellar track record of investing in a diversity of biopharmaceutical and digital health start-ups and this experience is a great fit with Canaan's strategy," said Wende Hutton, the firm's healthcare general partner.
