o White House Unveils Latest Innovation Roadmap

Washington, DC -- Making a case for keeping in tact President Obama's $146 billion request for federal research and development funds in the fiscal 2016 budget, the White House on Wednesday unveiled its latest innovation roadmap. The plan, known as the Strategy for American Innovation, focuses on greater R&D spending, greater attention on burgeoning areas from advanced vehicles to precision medicine and efforts to make the federal government more innovative through new programs. Specifically, the administration hopes to stimulate private-sector investment through better patent protection, maintaining an open Internet, enforcing antitrust laws, governing the commercial introduction of emerging technologies and making it easier for startups to raise capital. Another priority is federally funded research at universities and federal labs that ultimately leads to commercialization by the private sector. The White House said that a thriving U.S. economy "requires not only visionary and risk-taking entrepreneurs and companies, but also the foundational `building blocks' of innovation in which the federal government invests." It also warned that if Obama's budget request is ignored, "the American people could be denied important research advances, such as lifesaving biomedical breakthroughs, a leading advanced manufacturing sector and cleaner energy." The full report is at the link below.
