o Mountain View-Based Flex Logix Raises $7.4 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Flex Logix Technologies, a Mountain View-based developer of semiconductor technology, said on Monday it has raised $7.4 million in a new round of funding, led by Eclipse Ventures (formerly the Formation 8 hardware fund). Previous backers Lux Capital and the Tate Family Trust also participated in the round, which the company will use to expand its engineering and sales team, as well as bolster marketing efforts. "This financing will help us hire the best possible people to support our growing customer base," said CEO Geoff Tate. Flex Logix's EFLX technology enables FPGAs to be embedded into SoCs, allowing system designs to be updated after initial manufacture. Shirish Sathaye of Formation 8 will join the company's board of directors.

o Palo Alto-Based Simility Lands $5.7 Million in Seed Funding

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Simility, a Palo Alto-based developer of cloud-based fraud detection software, said it has raised $5.7 million in a round of seed funding. The company, which had previously announced a $3.45 million tranche led by Accel Partners, said it has added new investments by Trinity Ventures and angels. Simility's technology, currently in closed beta, combines machine learning with human analysis to help spot fraud in online marketplaces. "We started Simility because online fraud was increasing in sophistication and volume, yet fraud detection technology was not keeping up," said CEO Rahul Pangam. "Fraud managers can benefit from machine learning that spots patterns in evolving fraudulent behavior not immediately obvious or intuitive to the naked eye. At the same time, human experience and intuition are essential to the successful application of technology to protect people from fraud."

o More than 15 Million Tune in to First-Ever Live Stream of NFL Game

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- More than 15.2 million unique visitors turned in Sunday to view the first-ever live streamed NFL game between the Buffalo Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars from London. Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said it delivered more than 33.6 million streams of the game, including about a third from international markets. All told, football fans streamed over 460 million total minutes of the game across devices. "We performed a technical first with rebuffering ratio of nearly 1%, while delivering over 8.5 petabytes to end users," wrote Adam Cahan, Yahoo's senior vice president of product and engineering, in a blog post. "We're seeing more and more people shift away from TV and we're thrilled to join the NFL in setting a new standard for sports programming."

o Workers at Silicon Valley Tech Companies See Home Values Soar

Seattle -- Workers at Mountain View-based Google, Menlo Park-based Facebook and Cupertino-based Apple live in pricier homes and have faster home value growth than other Bay Area workers, according to a new report from Zillow. In fact, the average Apple worker now lives in a home that is more than five times more valuable than the average U.S. home, the company said. "This analysis highlights the widening wealth gap between tech company employees and other U.S. workers -- a gap that is putting increasing pressure on housing markets where tech companies are booming," said Svenja Gudell, Zillow's chief economist. To do the comparison, Zillow looked at census data to see where employees at the tech companies' live, then compared their home values to those nearby. The complete report is at the link below.
