o Senate Passes Bill Aimed at Improving Cybersecurity Information Sharing

Washington, DC -- Despite the objections of privacy advocates, the Senate on Tuesday passed a bill that encourages the government and companies to share information on cybersecurity threats. The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act passed by a 74-21 vote, and now will be reconciled with similar legislation passed in the House earlier this year. . "This landmark bill finally better secures Americans private information from foreign hackers," said Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), who co-sponsored the bill with Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). "This legislation gives the government and U.S. companies new voluntary collaborative tools so that they can work together against hackers that have been all too successful at stealing the personal information of millions of Americans for years." Participating companies would receive legal protections from antitrust and consumer privacy liabilities for taking part in the program. The bill also gives them the right to use "defensive measures" on their networks for cybersecurity purposes.
