o Menlo Park-Based Frazier Healthcare Partners Closes New $262M Fund

Menlo Park, Calif. -- Frazier Healthcare Partners, a Menlo Park-based investment firm focused on the healthcare sector, said on Thursday it has closed a new $262 million fund. The fund, known as Frazier Life Sciences VIII, will invest exclusively in companies developing novel therapeutics. "Our ability to consistently and successfully execute our investment strategy with the same core investment team over multiple funds allowed us to raise this fund quickly," said Jamie Topper, the firm's managing general partner, in a statement. Recent Frazier IPOs and exits include Calibrium (acquired by Novo Nordisk), ProNAi (IPO), Collegium (IPO), Cidara (IPO), Tobira (merged with Regado), PreCision Dermatology (acquired by Valeant), Rempex (acquired by The Medicines Company) and Incline (acquired by The Medicines Company). The 24-year-old firm now has more than $2.4 billion in committed capital under management.

o San Jose-Based IDT to Raise $325 Million in Convertible Notes Offering

San Jose, Calif. -- Days after announcing plans to acquire Germany's ZMDI, San Jose-based Integrated Device Technology (IDT), a maker of low-power, high-performance mixed-signal semiconductors, said it plans to raise $325 million through a private offering of convertible senior notes. The notes, being sold to institutional buyers, are due in 2022. IDT said it will use a portion of the proceeds to repurchase shares of the company. The news comes less than a week after IDT said it would pay $310 million to acquire ZMDI, a supplier of sensing and digital power semiconductors for the automotive and industrial markets. That deal is expected to close by year's end.

o Smartphone Ownership Levels Spike Among Young Adults, Wealthy

Washington, DC -- More than two-thirds of U.S. adults now have a smartphone -- up from 35% in 2011 -- with younger adults and higher-income households closing in on near-saturation levels of adoption, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center. The survey finds that 92% of adults own a mobile phone of some kind, up from 65% in 2004. And 86% of those ages 18-29 have a smartphone, along with 83% of those ages 30 to 49 and 87% of those living in households earning $75,000 or more annually. Likewise, the share of American adults who own a tablet computer has risen to 45%, up from 4% in 2010. "These changes in device ownership are all taking place in a world where smartphones are transforming into all-purpose devices that perform many of the same functions of specialized technology, such as music players, e-book readers or even gaming devices," said Lee Rainie, Pew's director of Internet, science and technology research.
