o VideoMining to Move HQ to Santa Clara; Hires Silicon Valley CEO

Santa Clara, Calif. -- VideoMining, a developer of in-store behavior analytics tools, on Tuesday announced plans to relocate its headquarters from State College, Pa. to Santa Clara, and named Silicon Valley-veteran Sanjay Mittal as its new president and CEO. The company said it will begin to make the move later this month, retaining technology development and operations in Pennsylvania. Founder and current CEO Rajeev Sharma will assume the role of executive chairman and chief analytics officer. Mittal most recently co-founded Spotzot, a mobile marketing company acquired earlier this year by Valassis, and early co-founded Selectica, a maker of Internet sales and configuration tools that raised $5 billion in its IPO in 2000. VideoMinding said the cross-country move will provide it with "greater access to talent and resources necessary to sustain the company's accelerated growth." The company's tracking programs in grocery and convenience channels are designed to provide clients with shopper insights and performance benchmarking. Customers include PepsiCo, Hershey, Heinz, Tyson, Sara Lee and Red Bull.

o Sunnyvale-Based Trimble to Acquire Canada's Agri-Trend

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Trimble, a Sunnyvale-based developer of software aimed at making field and mobile workers more productive, said on Tuesday it will acquire the assets of Canada's Agri-Trend, which operates a North American network of independent agricultural consultants. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close later this month, were not disclosed. Trimble said the acquisition will allow it to provide agronomists and other crop advisors with a stronger set of tools to advise growers on how to better manage their operations. "Together, Trimble and Agri-Trend will enable the integration of decisions and execution to give greater control over the outcome, resulting in maximized productivity for the grower," said Joe Denniston, the vice president for Trimble's agriculture division.

o San Francisco-Based THX Names Ty Ahmad-Taylor as CEO

San Francisco -- THX, the San Francisco-based developer of audio and video technologies, on Tuesday named Ty Ahmad-Taylor as its new CEO. Ahmad-Taylor most recently served as the vice president of smart TV services at Samsung Electronics, after that company acquired his latest start-up. He also has been the senior vice president of strategy and product development at MTV Networks' Music & Logo Group and a senior director of interactive products and UI at Comcast. The hire comes at a time of rapid change for the company. Founded by George Lucus 30 years ago to focus on audio and video technology for cinemas, the company has more recently begun to shift toward audio and video playback for consumers at home or on mobile devices.

o New Study Examines Permissions Requested by Android Apps

Washington, DC -- Apps available in the Google Play Store request 235 unique permissions to access either user information or phone hardware, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center. Despite the relatively large number of total permissions, however, the vast majority of Android apps rely on only a handful of common permissions -- the majority of which request access to device hardware, rather than personal information of users. At the same time, a new Pew survey finds that 90% of app downloaders indicate that how their personal data will be used is "very" or "somewhat" important to them when considering whether to download an app. Similarly, 60% of app downloaders have chosen not to install an app because they were worried about how much information they would need to share. "The data suggest that users are concerned about the information that apps require, but less is known about what permissions these apps are most likely to ask for," said Aaron Smith, an associate director of research at Pew. "In this study, we wanted to examine the apps universe itself -- both to get a better sense of the types of apps that are available, and also to gain a better understanding of the personal information and access to hardware that apps request from their users." The complete report is available at the link below.
