o San Jose-Based Aquantia Tops Locals on Deloitte Technology Fast 500

San Jose, Calif. -- Aquantia, a San Jose-based maker of Ethernet connectivity tools used in cloud computing and large-scale data center deployments, is the highest-ranked local company in the newly released 2015 Deloitte Technology Fast 500, an annual ranking of the fastest growing North American companies in the technology, media, telecom, life sciences and clean tech sectors. Companies are selected based on their percentage of fiscal year revenue growth from 2011-2014. Aquantia, which last month announced $37 million in a new round of funding, ranked No. 5 with revenue growth of 7,498%, trailing only top-ranked StartApp (21,984%), No. 2 Scopely (19,569%), No. 3 Corvus Energy (16,943%) and No. 4 Supernus Pharmaceuticals (15,099%). Other local companies in the top 50 included: San Jose-based Nimble Storage (No. 6, 7,380%), Menlo Park-based Intersect ENT (No. 8), San Francisco-based App Annie (No. 10), San Francisco-based Fitbit (No. 14), Hayward-based Aradigm (No. 19), San Francisco-based Prosper Marketplace (No. 24), San Francisco-based OneLogin (No. 28), Fremont-based Quantenna (No. 31) and San Francisco-based Toptal (No. 33). o Santa Clara-Based Varentec Lands $13 Million in Third Round

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Varentec, a Santa Clara-based developer of software and electronic devices designed to bolster the performance and capabilities of the existing power grid, said on Friday it has raised $13 million in the initial closing of its third round, led by 3M New Ventures. Previous backers Bill Gates and Khosla Ventures also participated in the round, which the company will use to continue developing its technology and expand into international markets. Varentec has installed 11 of its systems -- which includes software and power electronic devices deployed on the low voltage side of the distribution grid -- so far this year. The systems are designed to help utilities control voltage and reactive power in real time.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Huuuge, a Palo Alto-based developer of mobile free-to-play social casino games, said it has raised $4 million in its first round of funding, led by Korea Investment Partners (KIP). The company said it will use the proceeds to fund its global expansion and scale its distribution efforts. Sang-Ho Park, senior principal at KIP, will join the company's board of directors. Founded earlier this year, Huuuge develops and publishes free-to-play games, focusing on the fast growing mobile social casino gaming market. The company's games are available on all major mobile gaming stores, including the Apple App Store, Google Play and Amazon App Store.

o San Francisco-Based HackerOne Names Marten Mickos as New CEO

San Francisco -- HackerOne, the San Francisco-based developer of a vulnerability coordination and bug bounty platform, has named Marten Mickos as its CEO. He succeeds founding CEO Merijn Terheggen, who will focus on supporting customers, building partnerships and supporting day-to-day operations. Mickos most recently served as the senior vice president and general manager of HP's cloud businesses. He joined HP after the company acquired open source software firm Eucalyptus, where he served as CEO. He also has been the CEO of MySQL, which was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2008, and was an entrepreneur in residence at Benchmark and Index Ventures. HackerOne's platform has helped more than 350 customers fix over 14,000 security vulnerabilities, while rewarding more than 2,000 hackers nearly $5 million. Customers include Twitter, Adobe, Snapchat, Yahoo, Dropbox, Square, Slack, Airbnb and Vimeo. The company has raised $34 million in funding from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Benchmark, Marc Benioff, Yuri Milner, Jeremy Stoppelman, David Sacks, Brandon Beck, Nicolas Berggruen and Drew Houston.

o Bessemer Venture Partners, Accel Partners Increase Investment in Fiverr

New York -- A pair of Bay Area venture capital firms, Menlo Park-based Bessemer Venture Partners and Palo Alto-based Accel Partners, said they have increased their investment in New York-based Fiverr as part of a new $60 million round of funding. The company, which operates an online marketplace for freelance digital services such graphic design, music and video editing, marketing and copywriting, said it will use the proceeds to "more aggressively" attract freelancers who rely primarily on word-of-mouth, local networks and other offline means to do business. Australia's Square Peg Capital led the round. Fiverr, which now has raised $110 million since its inception in 2010, also announced plans to simplify the way freelancers price and bundle their services.

San Francisco -- Lumos Labs, the San Francisco-based developer of brain training app Lumosity, has named Steve Berkowitz as its new CEO. He succeeds co-founder Kunal Sarkar, who has been appointed chairman. Berkowitz previously served as the CEO of Move Inc. from 2009-2014, running both a web-based business for real estate professionals and the consumer brand realtor.com. He played a key role in the company's $950 million sale to News Corp. late last year. Earlier in his career, Berkowitz served as the CEO of Ask Jeeves. "After a lengthy search process, I believe that Steve is the right person for this role," said Sarkar. "I'm excited that he is on board to scale our company to the next level."
