o Redwood City-Based Innit Launches with $25 Million in Funding

Redwood City, Calif. -- Innit, the Redwood City-based developer of a cloud-based platform designed to manage and connect food information, said on Thursday it has officially launched operations after raising more than $25 million in funding. Participants included the company's founders and unspecified strategic investors. "By connecting food information to appliances and devices, Innit can help people maximize simplicity, flavor and nutrition," said co-founder and CEO Kevin Brown. Brown, who previously served as the founding team of Inktomi and was the CEO of Kidaro, is a co-founder with Eugenio Minvielle, the former president and CEO of Unilever North America and Nestlé for multiple regions, and Francisco Deolarte, a chef who previously ran $1 billion food businesses at Nestlé.

o Palo Alto-Based Cask Data Raises $20 Million in Second Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Cask Data, a Palo Alto-based developer of open source software designed to help developers deliver enterprise-class Apache Hadoop tools, said on Thursday it has raised $20 million in its second round of funding, led by Safeguard Scientifics. Battery Ventures, Ignition Partners and other previous backers also took part in the round, which the company will use to make platform enhancements and expand its sales team. Frank Artale, managing partner at Ignition Partners, and Philip Moyer, the managing director of technology at Safeguard, will join Cask's board of directors. "Big data has moved into the mainstream, but enterprises continue to struggle with the complexities and new skill sets required in the Hadoop ecosystem," said founder and CEO Jonathan Gray. "This financing, along with the operational expertise and guidance from our new board members Phil and Frank, will allow us to take Cask to the next level." Cask's technology is designed to accelerate the development and deployment of production Hadoop applications. Clients include AT&T, Cloudera, Salesforce, Pet360 and Lotame.

Redwood City, Calif. -- Rocket Fuel, the Redwood City-based developer of a programmatic marketing platform, has named Randy Wootton as its new CEO. Wootton, the company's chief revenue officer for the past eight months, replaces Monte Zweben, who has served as interim CEO since co-founder George John stepped down in March. John, who had remained chairman, will now depart the company to join a venture capital firm as an executive in residence. Wootton previously served as the vice president of customer success products at Salesforce, and also served in a variety of executive sales positions over the course of six years at Microsoft. "As we evaluated qualified candidates, the executive search committee witnessed Randy’s tremendous contributions and electric leadership style," said Zweben. o Greenspring Associates Raises New $430 Million Fund of Funds

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Greenspring Associates, a Maryland-based venture capital firm with West Coast offices in Palo Alto, said on Thursday it has raised $430 million for its seventh venture capital fund-of-funds. The fund, known as Greenspring Global Partners VII, primarily will target early stage technology-focused funds, and also invest alongside those fund managers in expansion stage portfolio companies. It also will invest in secondary interests of venture capital funds and companies. "We believe the size of today’s market opportunities is much greater than it has ever been before,” said Jim Lim, a managing general partner. "While technology has advanced rapidly over the past decade, we believe that we’re still in the early stages of the technology innovation cycle, and that there are a substantial number of disruptive startups out there competing to be leaders in large expanding industries such as cloud and mobile."

o Confidence of Silicon Valley VCs Hits Lowest Point in Nearly Four Years

San Francisco -- The confidence of area VCs hit its lower level in nearly four years last quarter, according to the latest Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index. The index, produced by University of San Francisco professor Mark Cannice, registered a 3.39 out of 5, down from 3.73 the previous quarter. "The growing sense of inflated valuations for some venture-backed firms, along with a lackluster IPO market, makes for a challenging business model for the venture industry," said Cannice. "Patience, discipline and vision will be needed to navigate what appears to be a current mismatch in private valuations, public market receptivity, fundraising and investment. Despite what may be near term challenges in financial metrics and cash flows, the powerful Silicon Valley ecosystem for new venture creation and innovation remains intact."
