o Redwood City-Based Equinix Completes $3.8 Billion Deal for TelecityGroup

Redwood City, Calif. -- Doubling its capacity in Europe, Redwood City-based Equinix, an owner and operator of data centers, said on Friday it has completed its $3.8 billion acquisition of U.K. counterpart TelecityGroup. The cash and stock deal was first announced last spring. The move adds more than 40 data centers -- located in Bulgaria, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Sweden and Turkey -- to the company's footprint, while expanding its interconnection platform in key European markets. It also adds more than 1,000 net new customers. Telecity's chairman, John Hughes, will join the Equinix board of directors. Equinix now has made three acquisitions in the past year, including professional services company Nimbo last January and Japan's Bit-isle in November.

o Silicon Valley VC Investment Plummets to Lowest Level Since 2013

New York -- Venture capitalists invested $4.26 billion in Silicon Valley companies during the fourth quarter, the lowest quarterly amount since 2013, according to the newest MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). By comparison, investment in the Valley was more than $8 billion in each of the prior two quarters. The amount also came in just 264 deals -- the lowest figure since the first quarter of 2012 -- and included several mega-rounds. Chief among them were a $429.8 million round for Palo Alto-based Palantir Technologies, a $158 million round for San Francisco-based Appdynamics and $100 million-plus rounds for Redwood City-based Impossible Foods and Mountain View-based Udacity. Nationwide, venture capitalists invested $11.3 billion into 962 deals for the quarter, down 32% in dollars and 16% in deals compared with the third quarter. "While a handful of unicorns and late-stage funding rounds by nontraditional investors continue to grab the headlines, more than half of all deals in 2015 went to seed and early stage companies, with more than 1,400 companies raising venture capital for the first time," said Bobby Franklin, president and CEO of the NVCA. All of the U.S. regional and state VC data is available though the top link below.

o San Francisco-Based SparkPost to Deliver Email for Pinterest

San Francisco -- SparkPost, the San Francisco-based developer of a cloud email service, said it has been tabbed as the new email delivery service of social networking giant Pinterest. Through the deal, San Francisco-based Pinterest has consolidated the sending of both engagement and transactional emails onto SparkPost's Elite platform. "We use A/B testing and SparkPost's streaming webhooks email metrics data to dynamically adjust our content and how we send emails based on live feedback," said Cole Rottweiler, an engineer at Pinterest who led the evaluation. The deal is a major win for SparkPost, which already counts LinkedIn, Twitter, Groupon, Marketo, Zillow and Comcast among its clients. "Pinterest shares our vision for reducing the volumes of unwanted and unnecessary email in the world and making each email more relevant to the recipient," said SparkPost CEO Phillip Merrick.
