o San Jose-Based Malwarebytes Lands $50 Million from Fidelity

San Jose, Calif. -- Malwarebytes, a San Jose-based developer of software designed to protect users against malicious online threats, said on Thursday it has secured $50 million in its second round of funding from Fidelity Management and Research. The company, which surpassed $100 million in annualized billings in 2015, will use the proceeds for continued expansion. "We will continue to hire more talented engineers to help us fight malware and accelerate Malwarebytes' strategic sales, marketing and future product initiatives in our fast growing enterprise business," said CEO Marcin Kleczynski. Founded in 2008 by Kleczynski, Malwarebytes was bootstrapped until raising a $30 million in its first round of funding in mid-2014, led by Highland Capital Partners. Fidelity previously has backed tech companies such as Uber, Airbnb and SpaceX.

Foster City, Calif. -- Scale Venture Partners, a Foster City-based technology venture capital firm, said on Thursday it has closed a new $335 million investment fund. The fund, known as Scale Venture Partners V, primarily will target enterprise software companies that have seen early traction with customers and are ready to fuel sales and marketing for faster growth. It will be managed by Stacey Bishop, Kate Mitchell, Rory O'Driscoll, Andy Vitus and Ariel Tseitlin. The firm typically invests $5-$25 million per company. Prior investments include Box, Chef, Cloudhealth, DataStax, Demandbase, DocuSign, ExactTarget, HubSpot, PubNub, Omniture and WalkMe. Scale's previous $300 million fund closed in 2013.

o Redwood City-Based Arrayent Closes Third Round at $15 Million

Redwood City, Calif. -- Arrayent, the Redwood City-based developer of an Internet of Things platform designed to let consumer brands deliver connected products, said on Thursday it has closed its third round of funding at $15 million after landing a new investment from ORIX Ventures. DCM Ventures, Intel Capital, Opus Capital and Comerica Bank had previously participated in the round. Arrayent's Connect IoT platform has been used to develop and deliver more than 60 connected consumer products from brands like Whirlpool, Maytag, Chamberlain, Liftmaster, OSRAM, Monster Products and Pentair. Products include smart phone-controlled garage doors, lighting, security and heating units. "With this $15 million investment, we are looking forward to expanding the number of use cases Arrayent enables as we continue to add new customers in 2016," said CEO Cyril Brignone.

o San Francisco-Based Docker Acquires Unikernel Systems

San Francisco -- Docker, the San Francisco-based organization behind an open platform for distributed applications, said on Thursday it has acquired U.K.-based Unikernel Systems, a developer of unikernel technology. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Unikernel's technology, already in use as part of some networking and storage systems, is designed to compile source code into a custom operating system that includes only the functionality required by the application logic. "Our shared vision to take transformative technology and make it accessible to a much wider audience has made the union a natural fit and it aligns with one of our core tenets to separate applications from infrastructure constraints," said Docker founder and CTO Solomon Hykes. Docker said that Unikernel Systems' team will continue to contribute to open source unikernel projects, including MirageOS, Rumprun and unikernel.org.

San Mateo, Calif. -- Kii, the Japanese developer of an Internet-of-Things platform with U.S. headquarters in San Mateo, said on Thursday it has landed a new investment from Cisco Investments, the networking giant's corporate venture capital arm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Cisco's investment will help enable us to introduce our platform and various IoE [Internet of Everything] solutions throughout the world and help us execute on the larger IoE vision," said CEO Masanari Arai. Kii becomes the second company in Japan to receive a direct investment from Cisco Investments.

o Milpitas-Based FireEye Acquires iSIGHT Partners for $200 Million

Milpitas, Calif. -- FireEye, the Milpitas-based developer of a virtual machine-based security platform designed to help stop cyber attacks, said it has paid $200 million in cash to acquire Texas-based iSIGHT Partners, a provider of cyber threat intelligence. The value of the deal could rise by as much as $75 million, depending on the achievement of certain milestones. With the acquisition, FireEye said it plans to add new intelligence subscription models tailored to clients' specific threat profiles. "This acquisition extends FireEye's intelligence lead with an offering no one else in the industry can match," said David DeWalt, FireEye's chairman and CEO. iSIGHT's intelligence network monitors and mines global cyber threat development and thousands of threat actors. The company has nearly 350 employees, including more than 250 cyber threat intelligence experts in 17 countries.
