o San Francisco-Based Blockstream Raises $55 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- Blockstream, a San Francisco-based developer of blockchain and related fintech technologies, said on Wednesday it has raised $55 million in its first round of funding, co-led by Horizons Ventures, AXA Strategic Ventures and Digital Garage. Previous backers Cloud Ventures, Blockchain Capital, Future\Perfect Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Mosaic Ventures and Seven Seas Venture Partners also took part in the round, which increases the company's total funding to $76 million. Blockstream said it will use the proceeds to bring its technology to market, expand its operations globally and support industry partners. Blockstream's platform is maintained within the Elements Project under an open source license. The company announced its first commercial sidechain offering last year, called Liquid, to provide an interchange settlement service for Bitcoin exchanges and brokerages. Blockstream also recently announced a partnership with PwC to bring these capabilities to established industry sectors.

o Sunnyvale-Based Yahoo to Cut 15% of Staff, Close Offices, Sell Assets

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Yahoo said late Tuesday it plans to cut 15% of its workforce and sell off several of its "non-strategic" assets as part of a $400 million cost-cutting effort. The Sunnyvale-based company, which reported a net loss of $4.4 billion loss last quarter, said the plan aims to "simplify" its structure, narrowing its focus on "areas of strength." "We're announcing a strategic plan that we strongly believe will enable us to accelerate Yahoo's transformation," said CEO Marissa Mayer. "This is a strong plan calling for bold shifts in products and in resources." Yahoo said it expects to end 2016 with approximately 9,000 employees and fewer than 1,000 contractors -- a workforce that's 42% smaller than just four years ago. Plans also call for the closing of offices in Dubai, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Madrid and Milan, and the separation of its $31 billion stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba. "Separating our Alibaba stake from our operating business continues to be a primary focus, and our most direct path to value maximization," said Maynard Webb, Yahoo's chairman. The company said it will focus on its Search, Mail and Tumblr products, as well as its News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyle consumer verticals. For advertisers, Yahoo will focus on its Gemini and BrightRoll platforms.

The company said the moves will better align with changes to its business model. "As we progress through our business model transition, we continue to take a comprehensive look at our company to see where we can be more effective and efficient," said CEO Carl Bass. "We are restructuring so we can focus resources on areas that will accelerate the move to the cloud and transition to a subscription-based business."
