o San Francisco-Based Fit Pay Lands $3.1 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Fit Pay, the San Francisco-based developer of a contactless payment platform that utilizes a wearable device, said on Thursday it has landed $3.1 million in a round of seed funding, led by Giesecke & Devrient (G&D). The company also received an investment in the San Francisco-based Plug and Play Tech Center after last fall completing its FinTech Accelerator Program. The platform uses near field communication technology, combined with card network tokenization, to interact with point-of-sale terminals at retail locations. o Cofactor Genomics Acquires S.F.-Based Narus Biotechnologies

San Francisco -- Cofactor Genomics, a St. Louis-based developer of RNA products and applications designed to diagnose diseases, said on Thursday it has acquired San Francisco-based Narus Biotechnologies, a creator of RNA diagnostic tests for neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer';s and Parkinson's. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Cofactor said the acquisition bolsters its expansion into RNA-based diagnostics, as well as its plans for the development of RNA-based tests for cancer and neurodegenerative disease. "There are a multitude of diseases where a tissue biopsy is just not feasible and current techniques like cell-free DNA are noninformative," said Narus co-founder Raman Talwar, who will serve as Cofactor's director of diagnostic development. "We're excited to integrate the techniques we've developed using cell-free RNA with the proven track record of an institution like Cofactor."

o Confidence of Silicon Valley VCs Rises for First Time in Year

San Francisco -- For the first time in a year, the confidence of Silicon Valley VCs rose in the fourth quarter, according to the latest Silicon Valley Venture Capitalist Confidence Index. The index, produced by University of San Francisco professor Mark Cannice, registered a 3.59 out of 5, up from 3.39 the previous quarter. That ended a three quarter decline in confidence. "General caution on the overall venture environment from the previous quarter appeared to ease somewhat in Q4 as a focus on the fundamentals of venture investing in disruptive firms began to unseat concern over new sources of capital that have inflated valuations in recent quarters," wrote Cannice. "A reduction of non-traditional capital and a return to the basics of enterprise building should maintain stable if not accelerating growth in the entrepreneurial environment for now."
