o Mountain View-Based Symantec Lands $500M Investment from Silver Lake

Mountain View, Calif. -- Symantec, the Mountain View-based Internet security giant, said it has landed a new $500 million investment from Menlo Park-based technology investment firm Silver Lake. In connection with the investment, Symantec said its board of directors has increased the company's total capital return program to $5.5 billion, returning to shareholders funds representing all of the after-tax cash proceeds from its recent sale of Veritas. The board expects to complete the capital return by the end of March 2017. Michael Brown, Symantec's president and CEO, said the investment "validates the significant progress we've made in our transformation and is a tremendous vote of confidence in the company." Ken Hao, managing partner of Silver Lake, will be appointed to Symantec's board of directors. Separately, Symantec said it is targeting $400 million in cost savings by the end of fiscal 2018, but didn't announce specific measures.

o San Francisco-Based Jask Raises $2 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- Jask, a San Francisco-based startup using artificial intelligence and advanced analytics for cyber-security, said it has raised $2 million in a new round of seed funding, led by Battery Ventures. Vertical Venture Partners and other prominent angel investors also took part in the round, which the company will use to develop its product and secure early customers. Jask is building what it calls a predictive "security operations center," which leverages artificial intelligence to make security measures more proactive and keep users ahead of sophisticated cyber-attacks. The company is targeting a product release for the second half of 2016. "Our software allows enterprises to better analyze security information and find threats buried in data -- all in an automated way that doesn't require them to throw more bodies at the problem," said founder and CEO Greg Martin. Martin previously started cyber threat intelligence firm ThreatStream and played a key role at ArcSight, which makes software to monitor corporate networks and protect them from hackers.

San Francisco -- Startup incubator and seed fund 1776 on Thursday night chose five companies from its regional final in San Francisco to advance to the Challenge Cup Global Finals, scheduled to take place in Washington, DC this June. The San Francisco event showcased both startups from the city and the companies that advanced from local competitions held in Austin, Boise, Denver, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City and Seattle. Winners included: Noappfee, creator of a tenant-led generation tool for property management companies; Prima Temp, developer of a personal fertility sensor that continuously tracks a woman's core body temperature; GenZ Technology, which develops precision spray equipment for superior crop coverage; vThreat, maker of a platform used by organizations to validate cybersecurity controls; and LeaveLogic, developer of a platform that lets employees self-service their leave choices. o FTC Settles Charges with San Francisco-Based Vulcun

San Francisco -- Vulcun, a San Francisco-based fantasy gaming company, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission (FTC) charges that it unfairly replaced a popular web browser game with a program that installed apps on users' mobile devices without their permission. In its complaint, the FTC alleged that the company and its founders, Ali Moiz and Murtaza Hussein, purchased Running Fred, a Google Chrome browser extension game used by more than 200,000 consumers, and replaced it with Vulcun's own extension, which purported to offer users unbiased recommendations of popular Android apps. What the extension actually did, the FTC charged, was to install apps directly on the Android devices of consumers, while bypassing the permissions process in the Android operating system. "After Vulcun acquired the Running Fred game, they used it to install a different app, commandeer people's computers and bombard them with ads," said Jessica Rich, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "We're very pleased we were able to stop these practices."
