o San Francisco-Based Mattermark Raises $7.3 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- Mattermark, the San Francisco-based data intelligence startup, said on Monday it has raised $7.3 million in its second round of funding, which came at a $42 million valuation. Foundry Group and Jon Hallett co-led the round, which also included participation from the company's previous backers. Mattermark, which now has raised $18.4 million since its inception, has evolved from a research database for startup investors into a full sales intelligence platform with 50 employees and 500 customers. "With this additional funding we have the resources it takes to build something special and change the way business people ask and answer their most important questions online," wrote CEO Danielle Morrill in a blog post.

o Tabushi Electric Opens North American Headquarters in San Jose

San Jose, Calif. -- Tabuchi Electric, a Japanese developer of solar technology used in energy management, said on Monday it has opened its new North America headquarters in San Jose. The company, which already had a smaller sales office in San Jose, said the new 41,493-square-foot facility -- located at the Hellyer Oaks Technology Park -- will include expanded office, training and testing space. Tabuchi also said it plans to hire 35 employees by the end of June, tripling the size of its U.S.-based team. "Demand for solar-plus-storage technology is growing because Americans want to make the most out of clean, low-cost solar energy," said CEO Toshihiro Kaihoshi. "We're proud to have a new home in San Jose and help cement the region's reputation as a world center of clean technology innovation." The opening comes on the heels of Tabuchi's North American launch of the EIBS Intelligent Battery System last year.

o Facebook Co-Founder to Buy Palo Alto-Based Jumio

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Unable to secure enough funding, Palo Alto-based Jumio, a developer of online and mobile credentials authentication tools, said on Monday it will sell its business to a new entity formed by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, an early investor in the startup. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Jumio said the court-supervised bankruptcy sale will provide it with the necessary resources to continue to fund and scale its business as it enters its next phase of growth. "After thoroughly evaluating all available options, we determined that an asset sale is in the best interests of Jumio and our stakeholders," said CEO Stephen Stuut. "We expect this process to be seamless for our customers with no disruption to our operations." In conjunction with the proposed deal, Severin will provide Jumio and with $3.7 million in debtor-in-possession so it can continue operations during the process. "The fair and orderly process announced today will allow Jumio's new management and its employees to continue to serve its top tier customers and to realize the company's potential," said Saverin.
