o Former Intel Chairman and CEO Andrew Grove Dies at 79

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Andrew Grove, the former chairman and CEO of Santa Clara-based chipmaker Intel, died Monday at the age of 79, the company announced. Present at the company's 1968 founding with Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, Grove became Intel's president in 1979 and CEO in 1987, also later serving as chairman of the board from 1997-2005. He played a critical role in the decision to move Intel's focus from memory chips to microprocessors, and led the firm's transformation into a widely recognized consumer brand. For years he was one of the most influential figures in technology and business, writing best-selling books and widely cited articles, and speaking out on an array of prominent public issues. "Andy made the impossible happen, time and again, and inspired generations of technologists, entrepreneurs and business leaders," said CEO Brian Krzanich.

o Gov't Postpones Apple Hearing. May Have Outside Way to Unlock iPhone

Cupertino, Calif. -- The Justice Department said on Monday it may not need Apple's help after all to unlock an iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino terrorists. A hearing on the matter scheduled for Tuesday in Riverside, Calif. has been postponed. In a legal filing, the Justice Department said that an outside party has demonstrated a possible way to crack the iPhone of Syed Rizwan Farook. "Testing is required to determine whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data on Farook's iPhone," the Justice Department wrote in the filing. "If the method is viable, it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple set forth in the All Writs Act Order in this case." Cupertino-based Apple has vehemently opposed the idea of creating a "back door" for the government to access the iPhone, fearing that the technology eventually would make it into the hands of hackers. Politico first reported the news.
