o San Mateo-Based Draper Associates Closes $190 Million Seed Fund

San Mateo, Calif. -- Draper Associates, a San Mateo-based early-stage venture capital firm, said on Monday it has closed a new $190 million seed fund. The fund will target early-stage investments, with the ability to support companies with follow-on rounds in certain cases. Areas of focus include fintech, govtech, healthcare, education, insurance and logistics. This is a new move for Draper Associates, which had historically been a personal investment vehicle for Tim Draper, founder of DFJ and the Draper Venture Network and an early investor in Skype, Baidu, Tesla, TwitchTV, Hotmail, Cruise Automation and Thumbtack. This marks the first time the vehicle has been offered to outside LPs. The core investment team will include Tim Draper, Billy Draper and Andy Tang.

o San Francisco-Based RideCell Raises $11.7 Million in First Round

San Francisco -- RideCell, a San Francisco-based developer of mobility-as-a-service software designed to power car-sharing, ride-sharing, fixed-route and dynamic transit services, said it has raised $11.7 million in its first round of funding, led by BMW i Ventures. Khosla Ventures and several angel investors also participated in the round, which the company will use to build its client roster -- which already includes 3M, the Santa Clara VTA and BMW -- as well as grow its core engineering, data science, product, marketing and sales teams. RideCell's platform is designed to automate operational tasks needed to run a transportation system, enabling cities, campuses and multi-city mobility providers to launch on-demand, car-sharing and fixed-route services in weeks, and optimize and scale them without human intervention. "Until now, transportation software has required manual operation of dispatch, routing, scheduling and other operational functions, leading to an absurd world where a fleet of autonomous vehicles would have to be manually managed," said CEO Aarjav Trivedi. "By designing a platform that enables autonomous operation of transportation services, RideCell is building parity with this second strategic inflection point -- autonomous driving."
