o Mountain View-Based Datera Emerges with $40 Million in Funding

Mountain View, Calif. -- Datera, a Mountain View-based developer of storage software designed to improve the operational efficiency of enterprise and service provider clouds, said on Tuesday it has emerged from stealth mode after raising $40 million in funding. Investors included Khosla Ventures, Samsung Ventures and individual investors Andy Bechtolsheim and Pradeep Sindhu. The company was founded in 2013 by Marc Fleischmann, Nicholas Bellinger and Claudio Fleiner, the creators and maintainers of the Linux IO storage stack. Its first product, Datera Elastic Data Fabric, is scale-out storage software designed to turn standard, commodity hardware into API-driven, policy-based storage fabric for large-scale clouds. "In the cloud era, the way the data center is managed and operated is fundamentally different," said Fleischmann. "Our team… is focused on building products specifically designed for customers in this new world."

o San Mateo-Based PerimeterX Launches After Raising $12 Million

San Mateo, Calif. -- PerimeterX, a San Mateo-based developer of threat protection technology, on Tuesday officially launched operations after raising $12 million in funding. Backers included Jonathan Heiliger of Vertex Ventures, the former vice president of technical operations at Facebook, and Data Collective. The company, which was founded in late 2014, also has introduced its new security service, Bot Defender, which uses behavioral fingerprinting technology to defend websites from all types of automated attacks. The fingerprints are based on hundreds of indicators profiling users, their browsers and networks, instead of relying on historical signatures of bad bots, which quickly become outdated. Two of PerimeterX's co-founders, Omri Iluz (CEO) and Ido Safruti (CTO), previously served as executives at Sunnyvale-based Cotendo, a developer of cloud-based web and mobile acceleration technologies that was acquired by Akamai for $268 million in early 2012. Another co-founder, Ophir Ashkenazi, serves as CFO.
