o San Francisco-Based Affirm Raises $100 Million in Fourth Round

San Francisco -- Affirm, the San Francisco-based financial services technology company led by PayPal co-founder Max Levchin, said on Wednesday it has raised $100 million in its fourth round of funding, led by Founders Fund. Previous backers Lightspeed Venture Partners, Spark Capital, Khosla Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz and Jefferies also participated, along with other new investors. The company said it will use the new capital to increase its loan distribution capacity, grow its merchant clientele -- which increased from 100 to more than 700 over the past year -- and expand new financial product offerings beyond point-of-sale financing. Additionally, Affirm said it has hired former Avangate executive and Amazon sales leader Len Eschweiler as its senior vice president of retail. Affirm gives shoppers the flexibility to buy now and make monthly payments for their purchases. The company uses technology and analytics designed to look beyond traditional FICO scores in assessing customers' credit-worthiness.

o Redwood City-Based OpenGov Acquires Ontodia

Redwood City, Calif. -- OpenGov, a Redwood City-based developer of financial intelligence, planning and transparency tools for governments, said on Wednesday it has acquired New York-based Ontodia, a provider of open data and performance management tools using CKAN, an open-source data-portal for governments. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ontodia co-founders Joel Natividad and Sami Baig, two well known CKAN open data experts, will join the company, along with all of Ontodia's other employees, and will work in OpenGov's New York office. "In the future, technology will play a huge role in tracking the trillions of dollars that flow through state and local governments, helping to better allocate resources and share best practices," said Joe Lonsdale, the co-founder and chairman of OpenGov. "Open-source platforms have an important role to play in furthering a transparent ecosystem that supports government decision making, and I'm excited about how Ontodia will allow us to extend OpenGov's impact." CKAN powers Data.gov, the home of U.S. government's open data initiative, Data.gov.uk, and hundreds of other open data projects for cities, counties, states and national governments.
