o San Jose-Based Pixelworks to Cut 24% of Staff in Bid to Reach Breakeven

San Jose, Calif. -- Striving to reach breakeven, San Jose-based Pixelworks, a developer of video display processing technology, said it will cut 24% of its workforce, primarily in the areas of development, operations, sales and marketing. The company said the move will save it at least $5.0 million a year, helping it better align expenses with current revenue levels. "We expect that our improved cost structure combined with revenue growth for the balance of the year will enable the company to achieve cash flow breakeven by the fourth quarter," said interim CEO Stephen Domenik. Pixelworks expects the restructuring to be completed by the end of September. The news comes as the company said it anticipates a $4.2 million net loss in the first quarter on revenue of $11.1 million.

o San Francisco-Based Uber Will Pay $10 Million to Settle California Suit

San Francisco -- Uber, the San Francisco-based on-demand car service, will pay $10 million to settle a lawsuit filed in California challenging the company's contention that its driver background checks were more thorough than those of competing taxi companies. "We've agreed not to use terms like `safest ride on the road' or describe our background checks as `the gold standard,'" Uber said in a statement. Under the settlement, Uber will pay a civil penalty of $5 million each to Los Angeles and San Francisco counties within the next 60 days, and must pay an additional $15 million if it fails to comply with the terms of the settlement over the next two years. The company also must ensure that its passenger fare calculation app meets accuracy standards set by the California Department of Agriculture's Division of Measurement Standards, and must first receive approval from airports in California before having its drivers drop off and pick up passengers there. "The result we achieved today goes well beyond its impact on Uber," said San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón. "It sends a clear message to all businesses, and to startups in particular, that in the quest to quickly obtain market share, laws designed to protect consumers cannot be ignored. If a business acts like it is above the law, it will pay a heavy price."

"I think machine learning has a lot to offer the financial industry, not just in enforcing new regulations and maintaining market integrity, but also in updating legacy technology and bringing the industry forward into the current century," said Click. Neurensic also announced the formation of a new Innovation Lab, which will focus on applying big data aggregation and artificial intelligence capabilities to nascent technologies such as blockchain.

o U.S. Information Technology Employment Shows Modest Growth in March

Alexandria, Va. -- U.S. information technology employment continued to grow at a modest pace in March, according to new figures from the TechServe Alliance, a national trade association for the IT and engineering staffing industry. All told, the number of IT jobs grew 0.2 percent sequentially last month to 5.09 million. On a year-over-year basis, employment grew by 3.9%, with 190,500 IT workers added in the past year. Engineering employment, meanwhile, ticked down 0.05 percent sequentially to 2.5 million. "While I would not characterize Q1 numbers as robust, IT employment continued to post steady growth in March," said Mark Roberts, CEO of the TechServe Alliance. "Many policymakers have noted that while there is still significant underlying strength in the U.S. economy, all indicators are not uniformly positive. The same could be said for job growth in technical occupations particularly engineering."

o Survey: Over 40% of Small Business Execs Unprepared for Cyber Attacks

San Diego, Calif. -- In an era when malicious hacks are becoming more frequent, a large number of small business executives say they still are not prepared for a cyber attack. More than 40% of executives said they remain unequipped to handle such a situation, according to a new survey by Vistage Worldwide. "In an age when hackers are becoming more and more sophisticated you must be prepared with a plan, security mindset and proper employee training," said Dieter Gable, the CEO of TB Consulting and a member of Vistage, which assembles and facilitates private advisory boards for CEOs. "A breach can come from a malicious attack, human error or a system glitch." Overall, small business executives feel optimistic about their business growth in the next 12 months, with 70% anticipating increased revenues and 55% anticipating improved profitability.
