o Los Altos-Based Electric Imp Raises $21 Million in Third Round

Los Altos, Calif. -- Electric Imp, the Los Altos-based developer of an Internet of Things platform that connects devices to advanced cloud computing resources, said on Thursday it has raised $21 million in its third round of funding. Rampart Capital led the round alongside company insiders and previous backer Redpoint Ventures. The company, which now has raised $43 million since its inception in 2011, said it will use the new capital to accelerate expansion, particularly in the commercial and industrial markets. Electric Imp's platform is designed to help manufacturers manage and quickly scale their connected products and services to millions of users.

o Palo Alto-Based Accel Leads $12.5 Million Round for Luma

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Accel, the Palo Alto-based venture capital firm, said on Thursday it has led a new $12.5 million round of funding for Atlanta-based Luma, a developer of home networking technology with West Coast offices in San Francisco. The Amazon Alexa Fund also participated in the company's first round, along with previous backers Felicis Ventures, Base Ventures, BIP Capital, Relay Ventures and Webb Investment Network. The company said it will use the funds to fulfill the demand for its flagship product, as well as expand global operations and continue research and development. Luma said its "Surround WiFi" system is faster than currently available systems, and also offers cybersecurity and parental controls. The company has taken more than 30,000 pre-orders, with units expected to start shipping in June. Accel partner Brian O'Malley will join Luma's board of directors. "We now have video streaming, cameras, garage doors and even toasters connected to our home networks, but there has been close to zero innovation in the space," said O'Malley. "Luma is the first company to essentially reimagine home networking."

o Los Altos-Based Unwired Planet to Sell IP Licensing Business

Los Altos, Calif. -- Unwired Planet, a Los Altos-based developer of mobile Internet technology, said on Thursday it will sell its intellectual property licensing business, known as Unwired Planet LLC, to Optis UP Holdings. Under the agreement, the company will receive $30 million in cash at closing, and up to an additional $10 million in cash on the second anniversary of the closing. Unwired Planet said the deal is part of its plan to "evaluate its strategic alternatives and focus the company on reinventing itself." The deal is expected to close in the second or third quarter, when Boris Teksler will step down as its CEO. "My team and I joined Unwired Planet 10 months ago, and in that time we have replaced a record of losses with several litigation victories," said Teksler. "However, after assessing the company's financial situation, we felt it prudent to develop a range of alternatives for our IP business."
