o San Jose-Based Vasona Networks Raises $14.6 Million in Third Round
San Jose, Calif. -- Vasona Networks, a San Jose-based developer of platforms for mobile network capacity, resource management and edge intelligence, said on Wednesday it has raised $14.6 million in its third round of funding. Bessemer Venture Partners, New Venture Partners and NexStar Partners took part in the round, which increases the company's total backing to $48 million. The company said the funds will help support recent deployments by mobile network operators in four large cities, including by Telefónica UK in its London O2 system, and drive ongoing research and development efforts. Vasona's products are designed to help mobile operators improve network performance. Key offerings include the SmartAIR edge application controller, which assesses each cell's conditions and acts on congestion in real time, and SmartVISION analysis suite, which gives live and historical visibility into networks at the level of individual cell performance.

o San Jose-Based GigOptix Completes Magnum Acquisition, Changes Name
San Jose, Calif. -- GigOptix, a San Jose-based supplier of semiconductor communications components, said on Wednesday it has completed its $54 million acquisition of Milpitas-based Magnum Semiconductor, changing its name to GigPeak upon closing. The deal was first announced on Monday. Magnum provides silicon integrated circuits, SoCs, software and intellectual property to the professional video broadcast and Internet of Things camera markets. GigOptix said the acquisition will expand its addressable market from approximately $1 billion to $5 billion by adding the broadcasting, IoT and consumer markets. "GigPeak now has a significantly stronger financial foundation and larger product portfolio," said Avi Katz, GigPeak's founder, chairman and CEO.

o San Francisco-Based Projector Lands $4.5 Million in Seed Funding
San Francisco -- Projector, a San Francisco-based developer of adaptive messaging and push notification technology, said on Wednesday it has raised $4.5 million in a new round of seed funding, led by Baseline Ventures. Freestyle Capital, SV Angel, IDG Ventures, True Ventures and angel investors also participated in the round, which the company will use to bring its core service out of beta and into new market segments. Projector's web-based platform enables mobile app users to tailor their notifications to be more interesting, useful and helpful. The technology, which sits between the app and the push notification servers from Google or Apple, processes notifications as they are triggered by events within the app. The company is led by Timothy Young (CEO), previously a co-founder of About.me and founder and CEO of Socialcast, and Aaron Gotwalt (CTO), a co-founder of CoTweet and co-founder and CEO of Seesaw.

o Co-Founder of Sunnyvale-Based Plaxo Receives Life Sentence for Murder
Ashburn, Va. -- The co-founder of Sunnyvale-based social network Plaxo on Tuesday was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of murdering his ex-wife's new husband in Ashburn, Va. Prosecutors said that Minh Nguyen broke into the couple's townhouse last January and shot Corey Mattison, WJLA in Washington, DC reported. He later pleaded "no contest" to charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In 2002, Nguyen teamed with Napster co-founder Sean Parker and two Stanford University engineering students to launch Plaxo, an online address box and social networking service acquired by Comcast in 2008. He most recently had served as a venture advisor for TandemNSI.

o Redwood City-Based Omidyar Network Invests in Tandem
Redwood City, Calif. -- Omidyar Network, the Redwood City-based philanthropic investment firm established by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam, said it has made an equity investment in Tandem, one of the first full-service digital banks to be licensed in the U.K. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The firm said the move is part of a new investment strategy focused on supporting low cost, mobile-first banking services that take advantage of the exponential adoption of smartphones in emerging markets. "We are on the verge of a paradigm shift, where new technologies powered by a deeper understanding of the consumer are becoming central to how people manage money," said Tilman Ehrbeck, partner at Omidyar. "As the world moves to a digital economy, new banking models like Tandem can make a huge dent both toward financial inclusion in emerging markets and household financial health in developed countries." Tandem is scheduled to launch later this year in the U.K.

Santa Clara, Calif. -- ServiceNow, a Santa Clara-based provider of enterprise IT cloud services, said it will acquire San Jose-based ITapp, a developer of cloud automation software, in an all-cash deal expected to close later this month. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. ServiceNow said the acquisition will expand the capabilities it offers to automate and manage the complexities associated with the use of public, private and hybrid clouds. "ITapp will augment our existing cloud management solution, allowing customers to optimize their cloud ecosystem while ensuring compliance and security," said Sri Chandrashekar, ServiceNow's vice president and general manager of IT operations management.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- German banking giant Deutsche Bank said it has opened a new innovation lab in Palo Alto, which will help it evaluate emerging technologies from Silicon Valley and use them to bolster its products, services and internal processes. Deutsche, which is working in partnership with IBM, said the facility also will strengthen its ability to innovate, while deepening its relationships with start-ups. "The Silicon Valley lab will help Deutsche Bank offer clients new and improved products and services, strengthen efficiency and deepen its relationships with the Valley's innovation and investor communities," said group COO Kim Hammonds. The opening follows the launch of innovation labs in Berlin and London last year. The bank's innovation lab team has been active in Silicon Valley since 2014, previously working from a local start-up accelerator. At a launch event held Tuesday, co-CEO John Cryan and Hammonds heard elevator pitches from 15 start-ups that pitched ideas including software that analyses data in documents, an online identity verification portal and a number of blockchain-related initiatives.
