o Redwood Shores-Based Oracle to Acquire Opower for $532 Million

Redwood Shores, Calif. -- Oracle, the Redwood Shores-based database software giant, said on Monday it will pay $532 million to acquire Virginia-based Opower, a developer of home energy management software for the utility industry. The deal, expected to close later this year, includes $10.30 a share in cash. With the acquisition, Oracle said it will become the largest provider of cloud services to utilities. "The combination will provide the industry with the most modern, complete cloud applications for the entire utility value chain, from meter to grid to end-customers," said Dan Yates, the co-founder and CEO of Opower. Opower's services are used by more than 100 global utilities, such as PG&E, Exelon and National Grid. The company's big data platform stores and analyzes over 600 billion meter reads from 60 million utility customers. The news comes eight months after Opower opened a new, larger office in San Francisco. The SoMa office is 34,000 square feet, about 10,000 square feet larger than the company's previous location, which it opened in 2012.
