o Palo Alto-Based Maana Raises $26 Million in Second Round

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Maana, the Palo Alto-based developer of an analytics platform designed to let companies analyze data in multiple silos simultaneously, said on Tuesday it has raised $26 million in its second round of funding. Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures led the round, which also included participation from Shell Technology Ventures and previous backers GE Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures, Intel Capital and Frost Data Capital. The company, which now has raised more than $40 million since its inception, will use the proceeds to expand product development activities and build its sales and marketing teams. Dhiraj Malkani, investment director at Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, and Andy Fligel, director at Intel Capital, will join the company's board. Maana's analytics platform is based on its enterprise knowledge graph, which enables distributed, high-speed computation for data mining and machine learning across all data silos and data types.

o SBA Launches Third Annual Growth Accelerator Fund Competition

Washington, DC -- The Small Business Administration (SBA) said it has opened applications for its third annual Growth Accelerator Fund competition, which will award $3.95 million to accelerators, incubators, co-working startup communities and shared tinker-spaces. Winners will receive $50,000 each, with special consideration given to accelerators in parts of the country where there are fewer conventional sources of capital, as well as those headed by women and other under-represented groups. New to this year's competition, the SBA is partnering with several other federal agencies -- the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Education and Department of Agriculture -- to provide additional prizes to accelerators that assist entrepreneurs with submitting proposals for the Small Business Innovation (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. The deadline for applications is June 3, and complete details are at the link below.

o Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Climb for First Time in Months

Washington, DC -- For the first time in five months, worldwide sales of semiconductors increased in March, according to a new report from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Sales reached $26.1 billion for the month, up 0.3% from the prior month. Still, first-quarter sales were down 5.5% from the previous quarter and 5.8% from the same quarter in 2015. Despite the uptick in March, John Neuffer, president and CEO of the SIA, said that "soft demand, market cyclicality and macroeconomic conditions continue to impede more robust growth." Sales in the Americas showed the sharpest decline of any region during the first quarter.
