San Francisco -- Pivotal, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform-as-a-service that lets users update and scale applications in a private cloud, said on Thursday it has raised $253 million in its third round of funding, which will officially close later this month. New investor Ford Motor Company led the round, which also included participation from Microsoft and previous backers GE, EMC and VMware. "This investment will accelerate our global reach to bring our unique software development methodology and modern cloud platform and analytics tools to every forward-thinking CEO," said CEO Rob Mee. o Palo Alto-Based Eonite Perception Raises $5.25 Million in Seed Funding

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Eonite Perception, a Palo Alto-based developer of 3D mapping and tracking technology focused on making machines understand the real world, said on Thursday it has raised $5.25 million in a new round of seed funding. Participants included Lightspeed Venture Partners, Signia Venture Partners, Presence Capital, The VR Fund, Rising Tide, CLI Ventures and several prominent individuals. Peter Nieh, founding partner at Lightspeed, and Rick Thompson, partner at Signia, have joined the company's board of directors as observers. Eonite Perception was founded in December by Chief Science Officer Anna Petrovskaya, CEO Youssri Helmy and CTO Peter Varvak, based on years of research by both Petrovskaya and Varvak focusing on artificial perception in robotic and consumer applications. Petrovskaya was part of the core team that built the Stanford autonomous car "Junior," which was a precursor to the Google autonomous car. "Perception has been the greatest challenge in bringing smart robots and AI applications into our world, due to lack of accuracy and reliability, among other challenges," said Helmy. "Our technology works in the real world and immediately enables new applications like inside-out head tracking for VR headsets."
