o San Francisco-Based Verdigris Lands $6.7 Million in New Funding

San Francisco -- Verdigris, the San Francisco-based developer of an artificial intelligence and IoT platform used in buildings, said on Thursday it has secured $6.7 million in a new round of funding led by Jabil. Verizon Ventures, Stanford StartX Fund and angels also took part in the round, which the company will use to expand its manufacturing and customer operations. In addition to investing, Jabil plans to roll out Verdigris' AI energy sensor platform in a number of its largest manufacturing sites. Verdigris' sensors wirelessly stream thousands of samples per second from a building's electrical panel into the cloud. The company's artificial intelligence platform then analyzes them to automatically optimize building controls, predict future breakdowns and send users notifications about energy use. Customers include Autodesk, Honeywell, Hyatt Hotels, Intercontinental Hotels, Jabil, JBS, Marriott, Megabess, NRG and Starwood Hotels.

o White House Launches New Privacy Office in Bid to Protect Information

Washington, DC -- Looking to increase the use of emerging technologies to improve the way the federal government protects sensitive private information, the White House on Wednesday announced a new privacy office within the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA). The office, to be headed by a dedicated senior official still to be named, will lead efforts to develop federal privacy practices, collaborate with other privacy leaders to find government-wide solutions to issues and oversee policies that impact the privacy of information about people. "If we don't invest in privacy today, the issues will only be more challenging tomorrow," wrote Shaun Donovan, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMDB), in a blog post. "And while the role and responsibilities of the new office may evolve to keep pace with ever-changing technologies and advancements in information analytics, the new office -- and the career position created to lead it -- are here to stay not just in the months ahead, but for years to come."
