o San Mateo-Based GoPro to Cut 200 Jobs; President to Step Down

San Mateo, Calif. -- GoPro, the San Mateo-based maker of wearable cameras, said on Wednesday it will eliminate more than 200 full-time positions and close its entertainment division as part of a company-wide restructuring aimed at cutting $650 million of annual expenses. Together with the elimination of open positions, the company's total workforce will be reduced by approximately 15%. Founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman said the goal of the moves is to return the company to profitability in 2017. "Consumer demand for GoPro is solid and we've sharply narrowed our focus to concentrate on our core business," said woodman. Additionally, GoPro said that Tony Bates will step down as its president at the end of the year.

o Rocket10 Lands $3 Million Investment from Finstar Financial Group

San Francisco -- Rocket10, a Russian mobile marketing agency with U.S. headquarters in San Francisco, said on Wednesday it has landed a new $3 million investment from Finstar Financial Group, a Russian private equity firm focused on fintech. As part of the deal, Finstar will utilize Rocket10's mobile marketing technology across its portfolio of companies, and also has secured the right to further increase its equity stake in the firm. Rocket10 said it will use the proceeds to accelerate its advertising and marketing technology development, focusing on programmatic buying, buying-automation and virtual reality technologies. "The transaction will significantly strengthen Rocket10 as we launch a joint venture in the U.S. and expand our presence in Asia," said co-founder Boris Abaev. The firm currently generates more than 40% of its business from the U.S.

o Agilent Technologies Opens $14.7 Million Technology Center in Folsom

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Agilent Technologies, the Santa Clara-based developer of laboratory technology tools, on Wednesday opened a new $14.7 million technology center in Folsom. The new 53,000 square-foot building, adjacent to the company's existing facility at 91 Blue Ravine Road, will house approximately 60 additional staff. It includes a new customer applications laboratory and collaboration space, as well as facilities for providing the company's scientific consumables and supplies. "This new facility expands Agilent's capabilities for chromatography consumables and hardware, which are used in laboratories around the world and for critical health, safety and product quality decisions," said Henrik Ancher-Jensen, Agilent's president of order fulfillment and supply chain.

o Intel Names Leaders for IoT and Self-Driving Car Technology Groups

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel, the Santa Clara-based computer chip giant, has named Tom Lantzsch as the new senior vice president and general manager of its Internet-of-Things Group. Lantzsch most recently served as the executive vice president of strategy at ARM, where he spent the past 10 years. The company also has named Doug Davis as the senior vice president and general manager of its newly formed Automated Driving Group (ADG), which will focus on developing technology for self-driving cars. Davis, a 30-year Intel veteran, said he has postponed his planned retirement to lead the new unit.

Palo Alto, Calif. -- Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto is the top-ranked public high school in California and 19th best in America, according to new rankings compiled by Niche. Rankings were based on an analysis of academic and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education, along with test scores, college data and ratings from Niche users. Two other local high schools, Miramonte High School in Orlinda and Saratoga High School also scored national rankings of No. 36 and No. 51, respectively.
