o Apple to Open New Cupertino Campus to Employees in April

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple on Wednesday said that its new 175-acre campus in Cupertino, known as Apple Park, will be ready for employees to begin occupying in April. The company expects the process of moving more than 12,000 employees to take more than six months, with construction of the buildings and parklands scheduled to continue throughout the summer. The campus, situated on rolling parkland and run entirely on renewable energy, will include a 1,000-seat auditorium known as the Steve Jobs Theater. Jobs would have turned 62 on Friday. The ring-shaped 2.8 million-square-foot main building is clad entirely in the world' largest panels of curved glass. Apple Park also will include a visitors center with an Apple Store and cafe open to the public, a 100,000-square-foot fitness center for employees and secure research and development facilities. "Steve invested so much of his energy creating and supporting vital, creative environments," said Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer. "We have approached the design, engineering and making of our new campus with the same enthusiasm and design principles that characterize our products." Pictures and a video tour are at the link below.

o Campbell-Based Noel Technologies Expands Semiconductor Foundry Facility

Campbell, Calif. -- Noel Technologies, a specialty semiconductor foundry performing process development and substrate fabrication, said it has expanded its wafer-fabrication facility in Campbell. The company said it has added square footage and installed additional equipment to boost its production capacity by 25%. With the upgrades, the 20-year-old company said it has increased its range of foundry services for customers in the semiconductor, MEMS, bio-medical device, sensor and LED markets. "We perform many wafer-fabrication services integral to the development of the newest micro- and nanoelectronic products," said founder and chief technical officer Leon Pearce. "As a manufacturing partner located right in Silicon Valley, we offer chip designers a local foundry solution to shorten their R&D cycles and reduce their time to production."

San Jose, Calif. -- Tessera, a San Jose-based provider of product and technology licensing services, said on Wednesday it will change its name to Xperi and its Nasdaq ticker symbol to "XPER," effective Feb. 23. The company, which has approximately 700 employees, said the change reflects its expanded capabilities and refined vision. o Study: Tone of Tech Reporting Has Become More Pessimistic Since 1980s

Washington, DC -- News coverage about technology in the 1980s and early 1990s was largely favorable, but the tone of tech reporting has gradually become more pessimistic in the past 20 years, according to a new report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a science- and tech-policy think tank. The organization conducted a textual analysis of 250 articles from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post from 1986-2013 to assess the tone of tech reporting. The findings show that coverage of technology in the 1980s and early 1990s was largely favorable, with a heavy focus on the economic and military advantages afforded by advancing technologies. In the late 1980s, in particular, there was a notable focus on the economic opportunities afforded by the developing tech sector and its offerings. From the mid-1990s-2013, however, the tone of tech reporting gradually shifted, with more articles highlighting the potential ill effects of technology: its displacement of face-to-face interaction, its role in environmental degradation, its threat to employment and its failure to live up to some of the promises made on its behalf. "If technology reporting continues with the trend we're seeing toward pessimistic -- and in some cases technophobic -- critiques, it will likely spur policymakers and the public to support even more unnecessary, unwarranted, or unwise policy interventions," said Daniel Castro, vice president of the ITIF.
