o S.F.-Based Layer Raises $15 Million in Funding, Acquires Cola

San Francisco -- Layer, the San Francisco-based developer of a platform that lets brands embed rich communications experiences into customer conversations across channels, said on Friday it has raised $15 million in its second round of funding and acquired San Francisco-based Cola. Greycroft Partners led the round, which also included participation from Microsoft Ventures, Salesforce Ventures and other previous backers. The acquisition gives the company a messaging operating system designed to make texting more convenient and provide users the full functionality of their smartphones without leaving a conversation. Examples of Cola's technology include placing an order with one tap, scheduling an appointment, quickly voting on one or more options or seeing the live location of a delivery. "With this new acquisition, Layer is extending its messaging platform to give brands access to Cola technology -- interactive, stateful messages that live inside a conversation," said CEO Ron Palmeri. "A few taps inside an interactive message can replace multiple back-and-forth texts, making the customer conversation more efficient and delivering better business results via retention, engagement, funnel velocity and conversion rates." Jeremy Wyld, Cola's chief technology officer (CTO), will join Layer as chief architect, along with other engineers from the Cola team. Wyld was a key member of Apple's original iPhone engineering team, and led development of the first iPhone's networking and telephony software, which eventually became iOS. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

o San Francisco-Based Ebates Acquires ShopStyle from PopSugar

San Francisco -- Ebates, the San Francisco-based operator of an online shopping rewards program, said on Friday it has acquired ShopStyle, fashion discovery and search platform, from San Francisco-based media and technology company PopSugar. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Ebates said the acquisition will bolster its position in product discovery and enhance its expertise in the fast-growing fashion vertical. "ShopStyle is the leading platform for fashion curation and discovery -- and fashion is a key area of growth for Ebates," said CEO Kevin Johnson. Through partnerships with brands, retailers, stylists and bloggers, ShopStyle brings shoppers exclusive content and unique style perspectives. As part of the deal, Ebates and PopSugar Media have announced a partnership to develop content designed to drive traffic to fashion merchants. PopSugar will focus on creating content, while Ebates will focus on e-commerce and loyalty marketing.

o San Francisco-Based FOSSA Lands $2.2 Million in Seed Funding

San Francisco -- FOSSA, the San Francisco-based developer of an open source management and license compliance tool, said it has raised $2.2 million in a new round of seed funding, led by Bain Capital Ventures. Numerous angel investors also contributed. With the funding, the company said its product is freely available in public beta, with plans for a commercial offering following a 12-month test. FOSSA said its technology automatically scans code to analyze license data, then generates disclosures, attribution and surfaces issues on a continuous basis. The idea is to let companies automate compliance in the background, letting developers write software safely, quickly and in real-time. "You can continuously stay compliant, letting you build software as fast as possible with a process you can trust in the background," said founder and CEO Kevin Wang. The team behind FOSSA also created and maintains tl;drLegal -- a standard resource on open source licensing that has reached more than 1 million developers.

o Study: Constantly Checking Electronic Devices Linked to Increased Stress

Washington, DC -- A decade after the emergence of smartphones, Facebook and Twitter, more than four out of five U.S. adults now say they constantly or often check their email, texts and social media accounts, leading to higher stress levels, according to a new report by the American Psychological Association (APA). The survey of more than 3,500 adults found that those who constantly check their devices report higher stress levels than those who don't. On a scale of 1-10, the average reported overall stress level for constant checkers is 5.3, compared with 4.4 for those who don't check as frequently. Among employed Americans who check their work email constantly on their days off, their reported overall stress level is even higher at 6.0. "What these individuals don't consider is that while technology helps them in many ways, being constantly connected can have a negative impact on both their physical and mental health," said Lynn Bufka, the APA's associate executive director for practice research and policy. The APA recommends periodically "unplugging" to improve their mental health. "Taking a digital detox is one of the most helpful ways to manage stress related to technology use," said Bufka.
