o San Francisco-Based Casetext Raises $12 Million in Second Round

San Francisco -- In one of the largest investments to date in the legal tech industry, San Francisco-based Casetext, a developer of artificial intelligence legal research technology for lawyers, said on Wednesday it has raised $12 million in its second round of funding. Canvas Ventures led the round, which also included participation from previous backers Union Square Ventures, 8VC and Red Sea Ventures. The company said it will use the proceeds to further develop its software platform expand its staff and bolster the capabilities of its CARA automated research assistant for lawyers. "As technology has become more ubiquitous, we see lawyers facing conflicting pressures: to spend less time researching, but also to find every precedent that could help your client win," said founder and CEO Jake Heller. "CARA enables users to carry out the most comprehensive search of the law and uncover the highest quality information possible." Law firms such as Quinn Emanuel, Fenwick & West, DLA Piper, Ogletree Deakins and Greenberg Traurig all recently have partnered with the firm to use the technology.

o Bay Area Investors Take Part in New $14 Million Round for Avere Systems

Pittsburgh -- Several Bay Area venture capital firms, including Menlo Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners and new investor Google, have taken part in a new $14 million funding round for Pittsburgh-based Avere Systems, a developer of data storage technology. Tenaya Capital and Western Digital Capital also participated in the company's fifth round, which increased its total funds raised to $97 million. Avere said it will use the proceeds to expand its hybrid cloud product offerings. The company's FXT Edge filer technology is designed to help clients integrate applications requiring file systems into the public cloud.

o Newark-Based Kaiam to Acquire U.K. Manufacturing Facility from CP

Newark, Calif. -- Kaiam, a Newark-based maker of data center transceivers, said on Wednesday it will acquire the U.K. manufacturing facility of Compound Photonics (CP). As part of the deal, CP will invest in Kaiam to further develop the 300,000-square-foot facility. Kaiam said the large space will allow it to expand its datacom transceiver manufacturing capacity, while also giving it a cleanroom for processing III-V devices, including pHEMTs, HBTs, photodetectors and lasers. "This acquisition not only allows us to ramp product in the short term, but gives us access to advanced Integrated InP PICs at low cost that we will need in the long term," said CEO Bardia Pezeshki. Financial terms of the deal, expected to close in the next quarter, were not disclosed.

o Santa Clara-Based Intel to Provide Virtual Reality for NCAA Tournament

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Intel, the Santa Clara-based chipmaker, said it has signed a multi-year deal with Turner Sports, CBS Sports and the NCAA to become the official virtual reality (VR) provider of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. The VR experience will be available through a new NCAA March Madness Live VR app, powered by Intel, available for download at the Oculus store. It will allow fans to purchase a premium ticket for a virtual courtside seat experience, where they'll have the option to control the viewing perspective or opt for a produced VR broadcast in their headset. The livestream technology will launch with the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in San Jose.

Fremont, Calif. -- Buoyed by the nation's highest median annual salary for women in computer and math occupations, Fremont ranks No. 6 in SmartAsset's newly released list of the Best Cities for Women in Tech. Washington, DC tops the list, followed by Kansas City, Mo.; Baltimore; Indianapolis; and New Orleans. There are no other Bay Area cities among the top 15. Females in technology occupations in Fremont make a median salary of $68,180 (after housing costs), and the city has seen four-year tech employment growth of 28% for women, one of the nation's highest figures.
