o Survey: Most Americans Uninformed About Key Cybersecurity Issues

Washington, DC -- Despite the growing prevalence of cyberattacks, many Americans remain uninformed about key cybersecurity issues, according to a new survey by the Pew Research Center. The survey of more than 1,000 adult Internet users included 13 questions designed to test their knowledge of cybersecurity topics and terms. The median respondent answered only five of the 13 questions correctly, with just 1% correctly answering all 13 questions. While most people were able to identify strong passwords and recognize the dangers of using public Wi-Fi, far fewer were knowledgeable about technical issues. For instance, just 39% were aware that Internet service providers can see the sites their customers are visiting while utilizing the "private browsing" mode, 33% knew that the a URL beginning with "https://" indicates that traffic on the site is encrypted, and only 13% were aware that the risks of using insecure Wi-Fi networks can be minimized by using a virtual private network (VPN). Those with higher levels of education and younger Internet users are more likely to answer cybersecurity questions correctly. Both the quiz and the complete report are available at the links below.
